Re: 8ba Rebuild - worth the cost?

Take the broken engine out of the car and take it appart enough to know what you have to work with. This costs almost nothing. I like the idea of doing rings and valves at home. One trick not...

Re: Leaky Holley 885

If you look closely you will notice the threaded portion of the bore is just the bottom. A friend of mine with a 53 Mercury tapped the hole much further into the carburetor, and turned a new brass...

Re: PROPER Filling of '51 Car 3 sp/od

My experience is that some of the R10 overdrives have the fill plug located right where the large diameter drum for the overrunning unit lives. The space between the overdrive case and the guts are...

Re: T-5 behind an H-six?

I'm pretty sure the H series six cylinder engines in cars and trucks used identical transmissions to the same year V8s. Use of the H series bell housing and flywheel parts should end up with the same...

Re: 50-53 Mercury Flahead ID

From the pictures it looks like you have a mostly Mercury engine. The cylinder heads and water pumps do not match, the water pumps are 50-51 Mercury and the cylinder heads are 52-53 Mercury....

Re: What did you do today that was flathead V8 related?

My brother and I finished replacing the gas tank in dad's 46 sedan yesterday. It took longer than it should, but reproduction parts required modification. The only parts that bolted straight on were...

Re: Holley 94 Correct Fuel Level In Bowl

I have taken to lowering the float level between 1/8 and 1/4 from factory directions. The alcohol gas and hot temperatures in Texas will cause the gas to boil over down the carburetor when the engine...

Re: Mitchell overdrive

Measure your floor carefully. Some cars need floor modifications to clear a Mitchell and some don't. Trucks always clear so that isn't a guide for cars.

Re: Lincoln V8? We discuss them here?

I can't take credit for the idea, someone here on the Barn posted a picture of that kind of setup and I happened to remember it. Isn't the Ford Barn great?

Re: 47 Flathead Water Pump Swap Tricks?

I finally had a chance to take pictures of Dad's 46 with the silicone hoses. We swapped an 8BA into the car and I used silicone hoses to adapt the upper hose diameter. One reproduction F-1 metal...

Re: 1946 Ford Fordor project

Wow, that is a clever adaptation to use an 8BA generator on an earlier engine.

Re: Lincoln V8? We discuss them here?

You could take the water pumps off and try two cheap engine stands, one on the bell housing end and one on the front end.

Re: 50-53 Mercury Flahead ID

The only time there were "Mercury" flathead blocks was before WW2, and they were still shared with trucks. After WW2 the Ford and Mercury blocks were identical.
Your engine is a great example of...

Re: Transmission issues.

The early four speed "granny gear" transmissions have no synchronizers in them. Double clutching (or floating the gears if you are really good) is required to avoid grinding when shifting up or down....

Re: Piston hitting heads!

For different reasons I asked the group here about head thickness and doming to fit. The findings from some very helpful members was there should be enough thickness above the piston. The thread is...

Re: 1939 Ford 1 ton questions

The front shocks may be aftermarket replacements for the originals, I remember seeing a brochure somewhere showing shocks like that.
Excellent work on saving the tonner trucks, I really like those....

Re: Running hot with extended idle time.

One thing to remember about fan shrouds, while they help your fan pull air at low speeds, they are a restriction to air flow at higher speeds. What speeds do you normally drive your car? Set the car...

Re: Lincoln V8? We discuss them here?

There was a 49 Lincoln a member had in the San Antonio Early Ford V8 Club back in the 90s when I first joined. That car still had the hop up equipment that had been installed when it was new: an...

Re: Ignition Issues, Crab distributor

I would use a coil marked for use with an external resistor when running an external resistor. Otherwise the combination will have too much resistance when everything gets hot.
Also, are you running...

Re: 1940 Ford truck tire/wheel options

I use the stock wheels and hubcaps, they look good. If you want your truck to look like a truck then run 6.50-16 bias ply or 215/85-16 radials black wall tires.

Re: 53 Mercury unequal steering

Adjusting the tie rods to center the steering wheel is the method. If your alignment is good with no unusual tire wear then: get the car pointed straight and drive up a pair of those ramps used for...

Re: Some believe I've crossed over to the dark side. 39/40 vs. '36

Rebuild at 30,000 miles was common in the 1930s. The roads were mostly dirt and gravel so lots of dust to tear up the rings and cylinder walls, the lubricants were crude compared to modern oils, and...
