Air Maze Air Filter on Zenith Carb Question

’ve used the Air Maze filter for almost 30 years - recently replaced the ‘screen’ filter element for a real paper air filter. The rebuilt engine was installed in March, carb rebuilt a couple of months ago - engine runs very well. I can turn the GAV off and the engine begins to stumble, so I believe at 1/4 turn of the GAV out, the engine is getting a pretty reasonable mix of gas/air.

However, I changed spark plugs a couple days ago - swapped some Motorcraft pugs from Bratton’s (since March) for a set of Champion 3Xs and noticed that the Motorcraft plugs had quite a bit of carbon on them, I wondered if the air filter was making the fuel mix too rich. I;ve read about this, and wonder if I need to do something to the Zenith carb to compensate for the air filter.

thoughts ??

thanks - Jim

Get rid of the paper element and put the screen back on. The paper element is a fire hazard. If it worked for 30 years why change it?

I agree, if you run an air-maze the use the wire screen DO NOT USE PAPER

Or use a High Boy adapter with a K and N filter. If you do not care about looks, or are a purist, is an option

Re: Air Maze Air Filter on Zenith Carb Question

I've used an AirMaze for years. Plugs look great. I use a fiber mesh filter over the top of the AirMaze and use oil on the screen. I use about 1/4 turn GAV except when highway cruising. Then its maybe 1/8 open or less.

Re: Air Maze Air Filter on Zenith Carb Question

Anything you put at the inlet of the carburetor is going to reduce the inlet air flow, and reduce engine power.

I would take this advise ASAP.

Ours has been on for over 40 years. No problems.

1/4 turn is also really good sign. Enjoy.
