Air Maze filter

I have been using an Airmaze filter on a Marvel carb. Is there a preference for the paper filter vs. the metal mesh screen ? Does one restrict airflow more than the other affecting performance, etc?

I don't like the Air Maze for a variety of reasons, but it is more period correct than anything else. This is not a direct match, but here is an article on adapting a K&N filter element to the Air Maze. http://www.model-a.org/filtering_air_into_carb.html

I prefer the setup that uses a K&N filter, but turns up, rather than down. You can find it on eBay. Many don't like an air filter at all, because they didn't come with them when new. It was not long before air filters were standard equipment on all vehicles and other engines. They did that for a reason, so I like having an air filter. I am sure that there will be many contrary opinions on that topic. :-)

The pleated paper filter that fits inside the original wire screen space is more restrictive than the wire screen filter element. It will cause a carb that has not been modified to be "pressure balanced" to run rich.

Then there's the potential problem of the carb flooding over, soaking the paper element with gas, and then the engine popping back through the carb.

Just wrap and secure a rectangular air conditioner vent filter around the air maze. Works great, is cheap, and doesn't appear to restrict air.

Thanks for the replies and info. I located a paper type filter and tried it. Then I installed the mesh one after cleaning it well. The paper has noticeable restriction at idle so I'll use the mesh for now until I research alternates.

The wire mesh filter is supposed to be cleaned then dipped in clean oil, then allowed to drip dry.

I ran my own calculations 12 years ago using the formulas at the K&N see link below, and 200.5 cubic engine running at 2100 rpm and selected a K&N E-3050. To date I have over 30,000 miles using a K&N E-3050 and have never had any fouling of my spark plugs.

Here is a link to the same calculation on Model -A.org. The calculations on the below web site are at an engine running 2800 rpm, and the conclusion is that any of the three filters below are adequately sized.

◦K&N offers several filters that can be used with the Air Maze housing.

◾Part # E-3050 is 3.5 inches long.

◾Part # E-9257 is 5.5 inches long.

◾Part # E-2040 is 6.625 inches long.

But the site makes this recommendation.

“◦To provide some margin for the filter getting dirty, before you get around to cleaning it, I would recommend the 5.5 inch long length. I know it is an over kill, but I am currently using the 6.625 inch long one to allow for driving on dusty gravel roads and to extend my time between filter cleaning / re-oiling cycles.”

K&N markets an oil specifically for their filters. In a pinch, I don't see why ATF wouldn't work.
