What yrs would brown coil and brown outside caps be correct. Is this gospal.??? ken ct

Ken, There is some controversy in regard to the "gospel". It appears that in 1939 Ford began utilizing brown caps and coils. Thus brown and black were used in 1939. By 1940, pretty much (as far as can be found researching) all are brown. Same for 1941.
I can't recall at the moment the stuff that was used to make the items black but it (the ingredient) was being diverted for military demands.
I would be interested in hearing from those that may have some documentation that may prove this one way or another.

For what it's worth, years ago when I was restoring my 37 I found a few 37 factory photos that showed engines with brown caps and coils.

Well i guess that blows that ship out of the water.I always assumed black for 37,38 now it seems was also used partially in 39 and strictly brown for 40-41.Then why wasen't the brown carried over to 42-46. The war was going big guns by then?? I have seen a few crab ones in brn. but thought they were after market. The name you cant recall is Carbon-Black[a powder] We used tons of it at my employment for EI Dupont for rubber products.I used to mix this stuff on a Banbury mixer there. Main stay of the plant was making sheet rubber for AC CO.for fuel pump diaframs,LOL at that one. ken ct thanks. The war effort is a believeable one. We had thousands of little parts for the pumps,guess who was in charge of the pump room where hundreds of pumps were going all at the same time,checking on the diaf. durability,leekage and all the parts to repair them. ken ct.

I have seen 39-40 and even some 46 coils with brown bodies and black tops or black bodies and brown tops. Don't shut the production line if you have a part that fits. G.M.

Ken,
It appears we are getting a bit off topic (your question) as often happens on a forum.
You had asked what is correct. I understood that to mean what is "concourse correct".
On the Ford V8 Club concourse, a 1940 Ford is expected to have an all brown coil and brown caps. In '39, a black coil and caps are acceptable, brown being preferred.
"Mixed" top and bottom (color) coils are commonly thought to be service parts - not installed at the factory.
I can't offer any conclusive advice for other years.
