Default is this a tranny cooler or a heater?

sorry i can't get a picture up right now. I have a fordomatic behind an 8ba. its in a 53 f100. I had to put in a new rad, and since the new radiator is not set up with a trans cooler, i bought a new one. at any rate, the trans had an oil inlet and outlet plumbed to a small thin rectangular box on one side that was plumbed into the radiator. so water comes in and out one side and tranny fluid in and out the other. markings are harrison lockport n.y. 52m 852099. was this thing supposed to cool the tranny fluid or warm it up? google not much help, I think this is a later trans than original
