is this a tranny cooler or a heater? sorry i can't get a picture up right now. I have a fordomatic behind an 8ba. its in a 53 f100. I had to put in a new rad, and since the new radiator is not set up with a trans cooler, i bought a new one. at any rate, the trans had an oil inlet and outlet plumbed to a small thin rectangular box on one side that was plumbed into the radiator. so water comes in and out one side and tranny fluid in and out the other. markings are harrison lockport n.y. 52m 852099. was this thing supposed to cool the tranny fluid or warm it up? google not much help, I think this is a later trans than original

Re: is this a tranny cooler or a heater? wow, I can't imagine this rig was very efficient at cooling. Thanks.

Re: is this a tranny cooler or a heater? A water to oil cooler would be relatively small compared to an air to oil cooler. It may have been added as it was a truck and may have been used for some towing duties. I don't know too much about auto pickups, it may have been a standard fitment.
If you think of the trans cooler built into the bottom tanks of radiators, the actual part inside isn't very big. If your radiator has a cooler, you could extend the lines from the trans and run them straight into the radiator bottom tank. Mart. |
Re: is this a tranny cooler or a heater? The purpose of the transmission "cooler" was mostly as a "warmer". It aided in getting the automatic transmission fluid up to operating temperature, particularly in winter. Most transmission oil coolers are small radiators placed in front of the engine radiator, and are essential for heavy towing.

Re: is this a tranny cooler or a heater? I ran my 34 with a 327 and a 350 turbo trans. with a remote cooler for years with no problems . It let air flow thru and the trans oil circulated thru it.

Re: is this a tranny cooler or a heater? Thanks guys, I did like Mart said and ran oil lines up to in front of radiator with a small cooler. Since I'm in texas, I don't guess I'll miss the warming properties. Thanks gents.

Well...., Maybe not. I found some info that an automatic was first offered for '53 F-100s. What's strange is my '56 truck shop manual has no listing or info on any automatics.?? |
Re: is this a tranny cooler or a heater? 2 Attachment(s)
Yep, '53 F-100 pickups had the automatic option. The t.c. was heavily finned for cooling and they had the little water-cooled heat exchanger mounted on the BH.

Re: is this a tranny cooler or a heater? yep, that's it. brackets and all. Thanks.
