Ken,
It appears we are getting a bit off topic (your question) as often happens on a forum.
You had asked what is correct. I understood that to mean what is "concourse correct".
On the Ford V8 Club concourse, a 1940 Ford is expected to have an all brown coil and brown caps. In '39, a black coil and caps are acceptable, brown being preferred.
"Mixed" top and bottom (color) coils are commonly thought to be service parts - not installed at the factory.
I can't offer any conclusive advice for other years.
