Just a guess, it might be a 60 hp V8 transmission. 54 is the number (prefix) Ford USA used for 60 hp stuff. We first got 60 hp cars starting in 1937, after 6,000+ had been built for Europe starting in 1935. You might have a 60 hp transmission. I don't know if the European 60 hp transmissions were the same as USA 60 hp transmissions or not.

Many thanks to glennpm, that certainly helped.
Perhaps others that have had problems loading photos should follow his instructions. If it worked for me it should work for others. Graham |

The shift tower looks like pre 1935 I think. Is there a serial number on the flat area above the throw out bearing inspection cover?

Unless the pictures are printed backwards, the clutch actuator is on the right side of the transmission. This, and the "F" in "54F" point to foreign (most likely English) manufacture. From my experience with US made V8-60's, I know that the starter intrudes on the transmission case. This also seems to be the case with this transmission. Other than that, my knowledge of foreign Fords (much less the 60 horsepower variety) is very sparse.

Based on the rear transmission mount with the two holes for the emergency brake indicates to me that the transmission is for 35-36 Fords. I noticed that the clutch lever is on the right side of the transmission, so it must be from a right-hand drive vehicle. I do not know if it is for a 60 HP engine or not.

Definitely rhd as is in New Zealand.
I have only photos of the gearbox but will ask about the serial number. Looks to me like a 34 shift tower, but what is the breather thing in front of that? Tending to think that it is a very early V8 60 ex Great Britain. |

Here is a USA V8 60 transmissionhttps://www.ebay.com/itm/187078518388
The V6 60 came out in 1937.Yours appears to be the full size 35 trans when compared to this on Ebay.Your shift tower is looks the same as 33,34 also. |

How does the "54F" prefix fit into the whole scheme of things? It seems indicative to me. I believe then 60 came out in Europe before the US.

I am confused with the rods that go from the housing to back under the rear mount.
Also what appears to be a breather in front of the gear lever tower. |

Graham, At a guess I'd assume that trans to have been originally fitted to a '35 European Ford with the early 4 mains V8 60. The rods would be the engine stay rods, subsequently attached to the bell housing in the later versions...

I think you're right or close to it. I remember reading and article about the early 4 mains 60's and to seems to me that article had production numbers and even serial numbers in it, which should allow us to perhaps nail this down even more. I'll go out on a limb here and say that, just like "regular" Fords, "54F-7006" is a full vehicle serial number of a foreign built Ford and someone with the proper records should be able to nail it down. "54" meant "V8-60" in the USA and I can't see why it would be any different overseas.
