At minimum I would flush with a garden hose, add some cleaner if you wish.

My last new motor I left water in just temporarily to be sure there were no leaks. "temporary" turned into about a year and a half. Like you, I saw somthin funny goin on in there and found that in that short time the aluminum custom radiator pipes were almost eaten thru in some spots. Anti freeze in it now.
