Gel like substance in water neck? I drained the water from my flathead so I could add small piece of SS pipe on top of thermostats to hold them in place and noticed some globs of gel like substance inside the water necks of each head (Vintage Edelbrock aluminum heads).
This motor was built 2.5 years ago and I have only started it up 2 since bringing it home. It’s only had distilled water in it. Also noticed a bunch of small whitish colored particles on the ground underneath truck that came out with the water. See pics. Well I’ll add photos when the site will let me. |

Aluminum hydroxide forms a gel. White powder when dry. |
Re: Gel like substance in water neck? I would not leave water in there! You need some sort of anti corrosion stuff, antifreeze or what ever, but straight water will eat aluminum with electrolysis.

At minimum I would flush with a garden hose, add some cleaner if you wish.
My last new motor I left water in just temporarily to be sure there were no leaks. "temporary" turned into about a year and a half. Like you, I saw somthin funny goin on in there and found that in that short time the aluminum custom radiator pipes were almost eaten thru in some spots. Anti freeze in it now. |

Re: Gel like substance in water neck? Mixing different types of antifreeze together can cause a gel-like substance and ruin your engine. Perhaps this was done in the past.
