The normal process is to separate the overdrive housing from the OD adapter. Often, the rear housing will come away with the output shaft and the ring gear assembly still together, but they can come off separately. As stated above, the lockout shaft must be pulled outward before removing the housing. The lockout shaft is held in place by a slender tapered pin….you have to drive the pin out by tapping on the small end with a 1/8” punch. I’ve learned to make a shortened punch as the blows from a regular punch on a rusted pin will generally just bend or break the punch. The housing may be stuck to the adapter casting by old gasket stickum so a few blows to the housing with a heavy rubber hammer should help break the bond.
