Help removing the main shaft from LZ O/D transmission tail unit

2 Attachment(s)
I'm hoping someone can help me figure out what is keeping the main shaft from separating/sliding out of the O/D tail unit.

I have the section where the solenoid mounts loose and that wants to move forward with the shaft when I pull on it. There is something I'm missing. I'm thinking the rear main shaft bearing is tight.

** I have not yet removed the C clip that is in front of that bearing. Could that be what is holding it in place?

On another note, if anyone needs a nice empty case, I will gladly bring it with me to Hershey and you can have it.

Hi Tim.

You need to separate the two parts of the overdrive. Remove that lever you can see on the side. The two parts will then separate. Edit: You need to remove the shaft that lever is attached to. There might be a taper pin holding it in place.

You then take off a circlip holding the planetary set to the output shaft. The od gears will then lift off the shaft.

Then you can take off the circlip holding the synchro hub and the 2nd gear and first / reverse gear.

Then remove the big circlip holding the bearing in and the shaft will slide out forwards with the bearing.

We did the job on an English Zephyr. Hopefully the principle will be the same for the LZ.

Watch this video. It might be helpful.

Mart:

Thank you! Just watched the video. Let me give that a go and I'll report back.

Success! Thank you, Mart. All apart and a nice LZ gear set is waiting to be put into a trans.

The normal process is to separate the overdrive housing from the OD adapter. Often, the rear housing will come away with the output shaft and the ring gear assembly still together, but they can come off separately. As stated above, the lockout shaft must be pulled outward before removing the housing. The lockout shaft is held in place by a slender tapered pin….you have to drive the pin out by tapping on the small end with a 1/8” punch. I’ve learned to make a shortened punch as the blows from a regular punch on a rusted pin will generally just bend or break the punch. The housing may be stuck to the adapter casting by old gasket stickum so a few blows to the housing with a heavy rubber hammer should help break the bond.

If all you want are the gears all you need to do is remove the circlip at the end and slide the gears off. No need to disturb the overdrive.

Yes, I realized that once I pulled the main shaft from the housing. For some reason, I thought the main shaft would be usable and not specific to these O/D's. Oh well, it was a learning experience. I also salvaged the main shaft bearing rear bearing since it was still good.

I have a taker for the O/D unit.
