yes, i can see how that might work. fortunately, as it turned out, my sender is/was only finger tight. and so replacing it will not be difficult at all. but installing it securely may be.
thanks for the pic. |

got a new engine bay oil pressure sensor today, still no joy on the dash gauge. beginning to wonder if it's fried...
as soon as my plastic wiring schematic is delivered so i'll have half a notion of what i'm doing, i'll be hooking up my spare 6v battery to the dash gauge and see if i can get a reaction, if not, i've got one in my ebay cart... |

The hood doesn't open very far on the 41, which doesn't help much.

and what's good about your link is that one of the items on ebay also shows an entire dash cluster for sale too, with, more importantly, a picture of the back side of the the entire cluster and, even more importantly, that the individual gauges, like the temp, amp, oil pressure and fuel gauges are each secured to the rest of the cluster by a couple of small flat bladed screwdriver screws that are easily accessible from the back! so changing out a gauge does not, as i had previously assumed, involve removing the entire cluster from the dashboard! so maybe there's still a chance that just replacing the gauge will fix the problem. something i had not wished to attempt. ...you've given me hope again. ha thanks a lot! ![]() Last edited by hueyhoolihan; 07-16-2025 at 01:32 PM. |

I rebuilt the guage cluster in my 41, and for confidence I wound up using mechanical guages.

If you don't want anything to dominate the interior, these can be tucked away discreetly:

fortyonerag, Your gauge set up looks great. I can't believe the price of the other unit.

good point! until i get the old one out and the new one in i won't know for sure, will i?
but i was under the impression that the whole cluster (see p[ic on left), including the fuel gauge, oil gauge, speedometer face, ammeter and temp gauge would need to come out, and now i'm not so sure that that is the case. at least i'm hoping so. here's a pic of its backside (pic on right) showing the two small screws, at the bottom left and top right of each of the four small gauges, that secure them to the cluster frame. what i'm hoping is that getting to those two small screws from the back will be no more difficult than attaching the wires to their electrical studs. something that although proven to be a tedious and uncomfortable task, is something i've had the pleasure to experience already. ha i'll have to take another peek back there to check that those two screws are indeed accessible from the back...fingers crossed. ![]() Last edited by hueyhoolihan; 07-18-2025 at 11:52 AM. |

heuy:
FIRST, DISCONNECT YOUR BATTERY WITH IGNITION OFF BEFORE DOING ANYTHING WITH YOUR GAUGES. Depending on your physical size you may have to remove the front seat to access the back of the gauge cluster panel. In my 1940, I was able to push the front seat all the way back , lie on my back and remove each of the gauges separately by removing the 2 screws that hold each. Magnetize the tip of your screw driver as those screws often drop down behind the dash and are really hard to find, if dropped. VERY CAREFULLY AND GINGERLY REMOVE EACH GAUGE AS THEY SLIDE IN AND OUT IN A SPECIAL WAY FROM TOP TO BOTTOM. TAKE PHOTOS. Last edited by 19Fordy; 07-18-2025 at 01:26 PM. |

and coincidentally, the removal of my front seat was done before my last skirmish with the backside of the instrument cluster. but to be honest i don't think the "juice was worth the squeeze" in my case, as i was working alone and wrestling with that seat was quite a task, let me tell ya! geez! |

huey, This may seem silly but, wear a small face mask to cover your nose and mouth as you don't want a small screw to fall into throat and choke you. Or, put tape over your mouth.
