Changing timing will improve response sitting in the driveway but its a pig on the road and fouls the plugs black. I have the stock distributor and just purchased a good fuel pump and regulator. They just arrived but I haven't installed yet. Edelbrock says 5.5 on pressure and I already know voltage is an issue in keeping it consistent but if this doesnt work what would you recommend for a distributor? |

I'll try one more time. What year engine and car? If it's a post '49 8BA engine, it has what is called a "Load-A-Matic" distributor whose advance system will only work with certain Ford carburetors and your Edelbrock ain't one of them. You will need to change the distributor out for an aftermarket mechanical advance unit or a converted SBC distributor. If it's an earlier model engine, you can still use the stock distributor.
If you are trying to run an otherwise stock 239 ci engine with 500 cfm carb, you're probably have to make some changes to it (jets, etc.) to even get it close. A better choice would be a 390 cfm Holley or a Rochester 2G (which needs different manifold). |

It's a 52 8ba in a F3.
It's a brand new carb which was recommended to me by Edelbrock, with the matching adapter plate and manifold. Engine is sound with 95 psi on all 8 cyl. good valves. Very clean inside, it was tore down and inspected. It ran perfect on original carb but my son talked me into this so the money spent but I need to get this back on the road. It's not a parking lot princess, it's my farm truck. |

Farm truck? Put it back to stock and quit listening to your son.

A good option is to get a GM unit adapted to fit your engine with the correct advance curve. It will run great. You will still have to tune your carb but you won't be fighting your ignition as well. Charlie NY sells converted distributors that he runs on a test engine before shipping to you. He usually has points or electronic and GM or Mallory and is a great guy to deal with that stands behind what he sells. Charlie Schwendler (716) 662-9159 [email protected] |

To add, Charlie rebuilds the stock carbs and fuel pumps as well. If your original carb and distributor need to be freshened up, he can do it. It will be bolt on and go when you get them back.
Good luck with your truck and please follow up with whatever you decide. |
