Re: Columbia Rear install info
Now you know why the Early Ford V8 Club did not reprint that book. The Columbia reference is but one of many errors of omission and commission that have given rise to controversy in concourse judging.
The new 1933-34 book will make no reference to a Columbia rear axle for the simple reason that it was not a Ford-authorized accessory in either of those model years in North America and in the rest of Ford's world. |

Re: Columbia Rear install info
The Columbia two speed axle was first offered as an aftermarket item for new Fords starting in 1934.

Re: Columbia Rear install info
The operative word in your sentence is "aftermarket".

Re: Columbia Rear install info
Not certain when Columbia first offered their wares. I am certain that Ford did not authorize the Columbia until 1941.

Re: Columbia Rear install info
Hey Tim... is that page what you are offering to defend your position that Ford installed Columbia's in '34?
Did you bother reading it prior to posting it? Good grief man... Within the first couple of sentences, it makes it quite clear these were NOT authorized by Ford.

Re: Columbia Rear install info
Glenn, I did see that text described by Mr. Cole in the Ford Dealer & Service Field magazine.
It is important to note for folks that may not realize it, but that magazine was not a Ford publication. It was what I would describe as being very similar to a JC Whitney catalog.

It is also why that I was very clear in my '40 book that the Columbia was NOT an authorized accessory. I did (quite reluctantly) describe the Columbia offered by The Columbia CO. in my book but made a clear and precise note that that was the ONLY so-called accessory that I would bother describing as it is such a popular item in modern times. My hope was to offer enough information to guys that wanted a Columbia to at least be informed well enough to utilize the parts Columbia sold for these vehicles.

Re: Columbia Rear install info
Good grief Kube, I DID NOT SAY it was an authorized accessory by Ford in 34 when I posted the Club book page picture. I just posted it to show the book said it was an option in 1937 as opposed to 1941 that someone else mentioned. I made NO COMMENT, just posted the picture.

Re: Columbia Rear install info
You know guys, I’m not concerned with point deductions at car shows. I like my cars as original and stock as possible. I also like to enhance the car’s performance with period correct stuff as possible, and stuff that guys normally upgrade their cars with. My personal preference is installing crab distributors on any early V8 I acquire, makes it easier to troubleshoot and work on in my humble opinion.
At the outset I was merely asking for the “correct” materials as stated in the Columbia installation instructions printed specifically for 33-34 models.

Okay, you did in fact ask in your original post what the correct tubing was. "Correct" is not possible as the Columbia is not correct. In a later post (quite recent) you claim to care little for point judging. Okay, I can both appreciate that and respect that as well. So, you care about "correct" tubing used on an incorrect accessory but don't care about points. Hmmm... "Correct tubing" on an incorrect accessory is an answer that will be by definition an oxymoron. You'd also asked what diameter and approximate length of tubing was needed. Ah, never mind. I digress. I wish you best of luck with the installation.

Re: Columbia Rear install info
Kube, reread my last paragraph in post 32. You’re still
stuck on “correct” as it relates to an authorized accessory.

Re: Columbia Rear install info
I never initially said anything about correct!! I was merely asking what size tubing did I need and the length!!! This post really went sideways.

Re: Columbia Rear install info
Yes Straightener. The one in the picture is size specific. If you are planning on buying one, I would suggest an adjustable one for different sizes. It would be more cost effective and save space in your tool box. |

Re: Columbia Rear install info
Just saw a clip on Facebook of Chip Foose giving a tour of a building where they filmed season 10 of Overhaulin’. He had an original 33 Woodie he was planning on installing a Columbia in. What a concept.

Re: Columbia Rear install info
You're going to enjoy your Columbia. What controls are you planning on, the early vacuum over vacuum or electric over vacuum?
