attempting oil consumption control
at 0.004 clearance on center cam bearings the total area is as much as the area of oil outlet pipe in the valve chamber. I think it was to get all the oil onto the tray, the shield would also prevent loss of splash oil. eventually the holes around the edges allowed excess to drain while still keeping the rod troughs full. |

Your explanation helps. I'm trying to get my head around how shrouding the pump, which is immersed in oil, reduces oil consumption. You would think that with all the oil being splashed everywhere, especially underneath the pistons and on cylinder walls that it would be up to the rings to keep excess oil wiped away. At any rate, I suppose Ford engineers believed it would work, and so the shroud was added. |
