What is the purpose of the baffle around the oil pump?

Someone please explain the function of the baffle around the oil pump that was used on the later models. I don't quite understand how it works or what it is supposed to do. Appreciate the education.

Tom, I appreciate your response.

Some lowered trays may have holes in the tray flat areas for drainage but not sure for which applications or why they were added. The Ford Service bulletins don't show the holes.

attempting oil consumption control
at 0.004 clearance on center cam bearings the total area is as much as the area of oil outlet pipe in the valve chamber.
I think it was to get all the oil onto the tray, the shield would also prevent loss of splash oil.
eventually the holes around the edges allowed excess to drain while still keeping the rod troughs full.

Kurt,
Your explanation helps. I'm trying to get my head around how shrouding the pump, which is immersed in oil, reduces oil consumption. You would think that with all the oil being splashed everywhere, especially underneath the pistons and on cylinder walls that it would be up to the rings to keep excess oil wiped away. At any rate, I suppose Ford engineers believed it would work, and so the shroud was added.

Ford wanted the oil pickup to be shrouded so that it would pick up from low in the pan. Later engines in the V8 era were all shrouded as well but were separated from the pump by the interconnecting tube. The shroud ensures that all the oil is screaned before the pump gears get it. Ford wanted a lot of screan area in those early years to decrease the chances of clogging.

Providing the owner changed the oil frequently. I have seen Kendal Oil signs (old ones) that tout it as being a 500 mile oil.

I think that rotorwrench is most likely the line of thinking that Ford had. Lots of screened or filtering area with forcing the pump to draw oil from the bottom of the pan. The can or baffle around the pump may also help break up any whirlpool or cavitation that may try to start in the oil pan when the pump is pulling hard with a low oil level

Anyone have an idea how many of these were produced?

Ford changed them on the fly if problems showed up and the B pumps were around after that. Ford made millions of them.

So this system was used on the B as well? Never thought about that. :)
