Kevin, I went through the same as you on mine - I just couldn't get my head around having to put the key in sideways as being a stock feature, but I'm pretty sure it is.

If you don't care about originality and would sooner have the handle horizontal and the key fitting in "normally", all you should have to do is cut a new locking slot on either the top or bottom (depending on how you prefer to insert the key) of the round deck lid hole, and insert the square handle shaft accordingly.
