Wonderful model!
There is a product modelers use to simulate chrome which is essentially a rub on foil. Rub it in place, then trim with a very sharp exacto blade. Used to be called RealMetal foil. That could solve your cowl band issue. I'm a balsa stick and tissue guy with the occasional plastic thrown in. I wonder how many antique car guys are modelers as well?
