Here are some pics that might help you.
At the head of the starter bolt nearest to the pan might be an "L" bracket attached to a pan bolt. Remove the pan bolt. Only loosen the two bolts at the end of the starter until you can feel that it is loose from the rear engine plate. The starter has to be maneuvered out to clear the flywheel. |

Thanks
Yea the starter L bracket is not attached to pan bolt, it must have previously been removed and they left it unattached at that point. It rained today and I got in late so I will attempt it tomorrow after work. I did put a little "Ospho" on the door and fender today though. Pictures to follow |

Toby can answer, but yes. It's attached to the end of the starter by the oil pan.

I really wished this thing would have had the Flathead 8 but hey, I saved this thing from the crusher, so I am not complaining...

the orange circles are where I pulled out bolts (2 short 9/16 and 1 longer with nut 5/8")
the yellow circle is where the L bracket it, which appears has been left loose from the oil pan from a previous starter change job. and the red indicates the bolts I need to remove. got it. |

When I was a kid, I used to read "Uncle Tom" McCahill who tested cars for "Mechanix Illustrated". IIRC, he liked the 6 cylinder Ford engine over the V8. More torque, he said. Keep the 6; you'll learn to love it! |

No need to take the bolts/nuts off where the orange circles are. Put them back on. They are for attaching the bell housing to the rear engine plate.

Don't give up on the old "6". I've driven mine over 40,000 miles.

he wasn't home, so I parked down the road and walked in
![]() there was an old thunderbird vertible rotting away, a stutabaker, and old ford pickup, I didn't walk in far but there is quite a few old cars in there. I will go back when it cools down one afternoon. |
