I have worked on a lota fords but never any flat heads. mine happens to be a Flathead 6. My current issue is I can NOT get my start off. I have removed the three bolts to fly wheel, some ppl are telling me to remove the long bolts, some are saying I need to give it a nudge with a hammer...I do not want to destroy my stock starter as I believe my entire car is mostly original. Help.

They are fairly heavy built, a rap with a dead-blow or rubber mallet is not going to hurt it. Not sure about the 6, the v8 has a bolt near the front in a short strap to the oil pan bolts. The long bolts will take the case loose from the end caps and the whole starter may come apart. Not sure I see any advantage to that.

I really want to avoid removing the long bolts. I have removed a 5/8's bolt and (2) 9/16 bolts already. Shouldn't it just come put with some persuasion?

I would think so, but I really know next to nothing about a 6 cyl. I would try a few smacks with a mallet, I can normally tell by the feel of it if it is still connected somewhere or just stuck. One feels a lot more solid that the other, at least to me it does.

What do you mean long bolts? Starter is held in by two long boltes on the starter. Yes the starter will come apart if you pull it apart. Don't do that.

Starter doesn't have any bolts that are connected to the flywheel. Just clarifying.

Thanks Tinker, I'm screwing up here, spend to much time working on mustangs!!! Flathead starters don't have mounting ears! Sorry Harper, I was thinking later starters, listen to Tinker.

ok I stand corrected too, its not connected to the flywheel, but the bell housing
I have three bolts that were connected to bell housing and they have been removed. Now I am curious if maybe I have a later model engine? its still a flathead straight 6...

if the flathead 6 starter is like the flathead 8 starter, the two long bolts are the only bolts that hold the starter to the bell housing. on the v8 one of the long bolts also has a bracket to the oil pan. yes, if you allow it to, the starter can come apart when you unbolt the long bolts. the idea is to keep it together until you can put a couple of nuts on the long bolts after you have it out.

I went and looked at the starter on my 49 6cyl pu and
you need to remove the bolts that go through the starter,
just don't pull then all the way out.

Loosin the two bolts and tap the starter with a soft hammer. If it doesn't knock loose try a scrwedriver and a hammer at the starter face and bell. Little force will do it. Then unscrew the bolts out the bell and wiggle the starter out. Angle to engine and up some

It's the same starter as the flat v8. Bendix may be different. Same deal later with the yblock and inline 6, same starter/flywheels. Ford was frugal.

Starter will come a part as mentioned but they usually keep together. It won't just fall a part into a jigsaw puzzle. It's just really three parts. The face, the back, and the rotor. No big whoop

I will try to remove it tomorrow. I have a dr appointment with my knee then after that I will try again.
After thinking bout the lengths of the three bolts removed I now realize the two 9/16" bolts are only about a half inch long, so they are for the bell housing to engine plate more than likely, and the 5/8" x 2" bolt I'm not sure of.

As mention don't remove those long bolts completely. Just so they are no longer in the bell. hope the doc visit goes well. Let us know how it all turns out. Starter and the knee. ;)

Now I do know about knees!!! Had one replaced 3 years ago.
