Gee, I have compressors on three jump boxes plus a large compressor and a couple of other battery air pumps, yet I always opt for my $10 Harbor Freight hand pump.

Mark, is there room for the straight fitting to screw on the stem?

I bought a 12v portable air pump when I had my Cortez RV. I would pump up a tire sufficient enough to drive on in several hours. Forget about topping off the tire pressure.

I now carry a flip phone and a AAA card.

I have and use the $24 harbor freight pump. Silver metal one not the crappy yellow one. Its aired up countless bicycle tires, 4 jeep Cherokee tires, my blazer tires, and many other things. Has a cheap but effective carrying case that would fit under the model A seat. It is slow but it works. Nice long cord too. Now I have another one that has motor trend on it in the shape of a tire that sucks, it doesn't seem to get much higher than 10-15psi.

AAA is great unless its on a Sunday and you don't have GASP cell phone signal...theres many dead zones around that have zero signal on all carriers. Or as I found out it can be hours till they get to you.

Hi Mark,

My electron knowledge is limited, so my following thoughts may or may not be accurate.

The specs on the compressor show 15 amp at 12 volts which is 30 amps at 6 volts? This might be quite a current draw, especially if also running through an inverter. Others may have a more precise and knowledgeable opinion.

We did witness a 12v compressor running through an inverter pump up a tire in the middle of God's country, Colorado last June. We eventually switched to run the compressor off of my 12v car. It took a VERY long time to add air.

You also may want to confirm your jack will under the car while it resting on the rim. Another Colorado lesson learned.

Peace, Phred

Hand pumps still work to pump up tires.

Mark

I have that one in one of my cars. Works very well. I would check to see if you inverter has the capacity to operate it, some of those are only good to charge a cell phone etc.

I have one in my Pickup box. Have used it a couple of times for other cars, but never had the need for it on my own vehicle. It is 12volts, so I've had to pull up close to the needy vehicle to be able to use my power rather than theirs. It actually "came with" a used car I bought years ago. The cigarette lighter plug melted on it, so now it has clips to fasten directly to the battery (or starter terminal and head nut).

Ryobi makes one as an accessory to their electric drill. It uses the drill battery and works very well. It will pump up several tires on one charge.
No plug to worry about on the car.

I see a cordless pump is now being advertised on TV.
It's probably $20 plus s/h like all the other stuff on TV.

I had a air compressor with integral battery since my A's are six volt. The problem of the lever-type air line connector and metal valve stems was solved by cutting off that connector. I bought a angled type with a stem and hose clamped it on. A hand type pump works but while it's exercise, it can be a strain for many and who really wants exercise in that circumstance! Plus there's always air loss unscrewing the connector. My main use was having low air pressure in a Firestone tire in a fender well to get it in and out. Goodyear tires solve that problem too.

I haven't used a 12 volt air compressor in years.I'll bet they are much better now though.Back when I tried them I always found a good hand pump to be faster.I did just try a couple of the new pistol grip battery operated inflators, the cheapo one was just that.Cheap.I tried a good one,I think it was about $75.but it actually worked nicely.I have air bags in the back of my trucks and it is a bit of a pain to bring the truck around to the corner of the garage where the air hose hangs.I set the inflator to 50,push it on the valve, and 10 seconds later the bag is full.I'm buying one of those just to keep in the truck.

The one advertized on T.V. Called Air Dragon , 39.99 plus shipping, Has log cord on it plug into lighter socket. The other one called Air Hawk ,i think it was around 60.00 plus s /h. It look's like it has a rechargable battery.

Yep, I was wrong on the price. I saw the ad again last night, and it sells for "2 easy payments of $29.99", so it is $60, rather than the usual $20 plus s/h.

Thumbs up Re: Anyone Carry a Portable Tire Inflator/Compressor?

I found a Ryobi air compressor at Home Depot. Its powered by a lithium battery and is inexpensive. Its portable and works great.

I bought 2 of these 3 gallon gasoline mini-compressors at Harbor Freight on clearance for $20.00 each. Starts good, pumps good, not much bigger than a 12V battery. Gave the other to my grandson.....

Once you go 18volt Ryobi air compressor you will never go back. The battery impact tools are nice to have in your car also
