I don't think they did during the "Flathead Era" (which is why you can't find 'em in the books). The later cars (8BA and up) had glass sediment bowls on the fuel pumps. If you have one of these, you don't need an inline filter. I like the glass bowls better; you can actually see what's going on. Water in the fuel, general contamination, they're all there to see.
