What was the first year that Ford put an inline fuel filter or on the pump on cars?

I didn't think this was such a tuff question. I scoured the "Green Book" but could not determine an answer.

Are you talking about the glass bowl strainer or later models that had a screw on fuel filter below the fuel pump?

I don't think they did during the "Flathead Era" (which is why you can't find 'em in the books). The later cars (8BA and up) had glass sediment bowls on the fuel pumps. If you have one of these, you don't need an inline filter. I like the glass bowls better; you can actually see what's going on. Water in the fuel, general contamination, they're all there to see.

The "green book" is never a good place to research for "correctness". Rather, it is only a place to find a part that will fit and function on a particular application.
To answer your question, the glass bowl pumps became a standard factory installation very late in the 1946 model year.

I agree with Mike about what's commonly called "The Green Bible". Perhaps the term Bible is misleading itself, as that suggests everything you read in it is golden. NOT. The Green Book only tells you what was available when the book was published, not what your car had as original.

Original equipment should be found in the Chassis Parts and Accessories closest to the year of your car, and sometimes even that first book is incorrect, the correction being made in the book immediately following.

EDIT: Forgive me for any sharp readers who see a dual meaning, the Pun was not intentional.

I suppose I did not ask the question very well. Evidently it took quite a few years for the decision that a filter would be good insurance to keep the carburetor working properly. I can remember an old Allis Chalmers tractor I owned would occasionally have a bug in the sediment jar.
