Re: VIN or serial number location - 47 ford

I found it! Thanks everyone, this helped a lot. It was exactly on the top of the frame, and the previous owner had scraped down to the bare metal so I just had to follow it.

Re: VIN or serial number location - 47 ford

This all helps. Looks like I'm going to be doing some careful scrubbing with paint stripper in the future. There's probably a dozen layers of paint.

VIN or serial number location - 47 ford

Hey!

I need to get a VIN inspection by the DMV to transfer the title into state. Pain in the ass.

I've been looking to figure out where the Serial Number could be, but I can't find it no...

Re: Running, idling, not driving

NEW NEWS HERE!!!

Video/sound of it going here. The squealing is a belt I need to tighten:

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/uyAKo_xW3eA

You can hear what it's doing, basically. I was wrong...

Re: Running, idling, not driving

Great advice. I'll give that a shot.

Re: Running, idling, not driving

It's a horrible repro carb, but it's a 94. Not the good one, but one of the no-name brands that are out there. I sent it to the guy everyone here loves (whose name escapes me) and he rejetted it...

Running, idling, not driving

So I've got my '47 ford (v8 flathead) starting and idling. It will warm up and then I push in the choke and it hums pretty well.

However when I put it into gear (forward or reverse) it craps the...

Re: Rebuilding a carb

So I pulled off the air filter, cleaned off the plugs and connections, and took the car out for a quick 3 mile drive today to see if the filter would make any difference.

For about the first mile...

Re: Rebuilding a carb

I’ve been chatting with Charlie via email and he agrees it might be the air filter. I thought so too but didn’t notice a change when I pulled it off. Looks like I’m going to be sourcing a better...

Re: Rebuilding a carb

I've emailed Charlie about it and sent him the videos, I'm not sure the knock-off carb is even worth trying to adjust.

Re: Rebuilding a carb

Here's a couple of videos I made today after the car was warmed up.

This is revving the engine up and holding it:

This is the carb at idle. No...

Re: Rebuilding a carb

Yeah the new carb solved a surging issue, and I don’t remember if it ran rich before they swapped it. OEM mechanical fuel pump.

I’ve fiddled with all the adjustments, but I need to check the fuel...

Re: Rebuilding a carb

This is fantastic advice, thanks. I'll reach out to him. I figure it's probably a good idea for me to take the existing one apart anyway even if it's just to figure out how a carb works and so I can...

Rebuilding a carb

Ok so to sum up some stuff:

V8 Flathead - 1947. I don't have the original carb anymore, but a knock-off with a smaller intake.

Car's running real rich, fouling plugs pretty quickly and putting...

Re: 47 Flathead v8 timing adjustment

This was all very helpful! Thank you everybody! I feel a lot more confident if and when I need to do this.

Re: 47 Flathead v8 timing adjustment

I don’t think there’s a problem with the radiator. But if I need to pull off the distributor to handle timing adjustments, I might need to pull the radiator off from what I can tell. That’s what I’m...

Re: 47 Flathead v8 timing adjustment

Solid advice. Is it that much easier than pulling off the distributor? Based on previous discussions the carb is probably not suited to the car. Maybe. It’s a brand new one and the previous one was...

Re: 47 Flathead v8 timing adjustment

Also to get the distributor off, do I have to pull off the radiator as well? I can’t remove the fan hub as is there’s no space. I’m just trying to figure out if I should prep for a longer job like...

Re: 47 Flathead v8 timing adjustment

It's just a tuning of the timing - the car runs but runs really rich. This is part of troubleshooting to me - i'm also gonna measure pressure into the carb to make sure too much fuel isn't getting in...

47 Flathead v8 timing adjustment

I've read through the green book several times, tried searching around the internet, still can't figure it out.

What's the procedure for adjusting timing on a 47 v8 flathead. It's a round type...

Re: Time for a timing adjustment?

I'm gonna drop some pics below. I didn't pull the carb yet or anything, I spent yesterday cleaning plugs and searching for any sort of aftermarket fuel pumps on the vehicle. None that I could find.

Re: Time for a timing adjustment?

Got it - I've been convinced to not do an aftermarket distributor. What's on there now looks original as far as I can tell - it's the one they used in 47 (round type). Good shout about the lack of...

Re: Time for a timing adjustment?

Honestly this is how I started out, but I rapidly realized I didn't have a ton of time to work on it. I'm getting that figured out now though.

I also wanted to give local mechanics some business...

Re: Time for a timing adjustment?

Good to know! I kind of assumed since it would be hard to get at it and all of the videos I find have the radiator removed. That might just be for visibility though.

The fuel pump is an...

Re: Time for a timing adjustment?

Because I suspect that the carb he put on there isn't the right one for the car, or at least it doesn't have the right parts attached (air filter, maybe jetting). I also doubt my own memory of...
