Default Rain Gutter Issue

We want to install rain gutters on our '30 Tudor. However, there is a "bead" along the edge of the roof where the gutter should be installed. Its cross-section is a half circle with a radius of about 1/4". There appears to be some sealant running along the upper edge of the bead to seal it to the rubberized roof.

Does anyone know why this bead would be there and whether we can safely remove it?

Thanks much!

I'll take some pix. The bead might be plastic - shiny, fairly uniform in shape, and hard.

Purdy, this bead appears to be part of the roof. It's mounted where the gutter should be.

That doesn't belong there.Somebody used what they had to get by.The gutter goes in place of that.Hopefully when you peel it off the gutters cover the nail holes and the edge. That's hide'em welting.

Interesting! Agree it doesn't belong on the sides of the roof - couple of questions:

1. Will removing it cause the roof to leak?
2. Is the bead across the back correct?
3. What is "hidem welt"?

Thanks again!

Hidem welt is folded over on itself after it's nailed down. My 29 Tudor has metal across the rear. Your roof should seal ok with the new metal gutters and some sealer under them.

Open up the hidem and see if you can grab the nails securing it with a tiny electrical dikes. If so pull them out one at a time and then the hidem molding should come off

Thanks for all the tips, guys. I will investigate and report back.

When I looked at a friend's '30 Tudor, it also had the metal strip across the back - another part to acquire!

you are missing all of the rain gutter
in its place you have some hidum welt
the original gutters are two pieces snapped together
one,
the inner piece has a lot of holes and is nailed to the top
the second,is the actual gutter and is snapped over the inner piece, and held with a screw at the front end ,and a screw and clip a t the rear end
here are some photos of original pieces
the one on the green car has never been off and the removed one is shown up close

Yes, it looks like 'hide em' welt http://www.mikes-afordable.com/miva/...&Category_Code
This is a welt that has a round edge with a flat area in the center. You tack it on, and then fold the edges over to hide the tacks. Try to find a lose area, and with a soft instrument seperate the center, and look to see if you can see the tacks or staples they used.
As is often done they used a sealant. My concern is that any product to soften the sealant, may soften the top material, past the point of repair.

I would ask myself:
What am I gaining from this? Do I drive in the rain a lot, or is this comedic?
What is the condition of my current top, and I willing to change it for this project?

If you really want to continue, I would plan on replacing the top. This is not a hard or expensive repair, but the top material is easier to use on a warm summer day.
Evaluate the risk / benefit evaluation, and if you proceed, consider changing the top. If you are going to do this much work, why not have a new top also.

My humble opinion

I would add that I agree with one of the other post's. Try a small area and open the welt and test to see if you can lift it off, but keep my other thoughts in mind.

I was missing a rain gutter on my town sedan and I bought the repro aluminum gutter from Snyders, bent and formed it in place, took it apart , mounted the base, mounted the outside back on with a rubber hammer. A small wood screw on each end and a coat of black enamel finished it.

Thanks again. Great information as usual. You guys should write a book!

I will take a picture of the front end of the bead, Mitch.

Thanks for the tips and warnings about removing the hide'm welt. This is all worth rethinking a bit. We want to install the gutters so the car's appearance would be more correct. We have the pre-bent steel gutters from Snyders "in stock" waiting to be painted and installed and would need only a few other parts IF the welts can be removed without damaging the roof. On the other hand, the roof is completely watertight now.....

Ah well, life is a series of choices!
