this should help as long as you have a stock 6v pos ground system. pos would be the y/b wire on the right side of the meter

Wire it in turn on the headlamps and see which way the needle moves. If it moves to the right swap the wires.

Take a guess, much better odds than the lottery. Hook up the wires. Don't reinstall the instrument panel. Turn on the lights to be sure the ampmeter shows negative. Correct if necessary. Reinstall instrument panel.

this project {poor thing } doesent own a 6 v battery yet.

will try use 6 v volt charger in its place, should work, did so to see if
new light wiring harness was hooked up properly.

I asked the same question a few months ago. Followed the image diagram Mitch posted and I was set.

There is a good easy to follow wiring diagram on page 92 of the new Brattons catalog. Some of the repro replacement ammeters are model T. The model T was negative ground. The late model T ammeter fits the model A instrument panel but the wires must be reversed if used on the positive ground model A.

Had the same question earlier but with some thought and reading the instructions again, I noticed the words charging post and discharging posts. Tried things that way and it was right the first try.

Fred,
This is "For Your Information", if your ammeter is a reproduction, check the lugs for tightness, it may have to be disassembled to do so. Even though the wires are tight on the outside the lugs can be loose at the meter's movement which causes heat.
I've found several like this.

Good tip. You wouldn't think with 21st Century quality controls you'd need to do this, would you?

I'm installing one this weekend on my dad's Model A. His is a 12v negative ground system that cannot use the regular Model A wiring diagram. Anyone have a universal wiring diagram for a 12v negative ground system? Thanks in advance.

Connect the battery cables hegative ground. Reverse the connections at the ammeter and the coil. You will need to either use a ballast resistor at the coil or use a 3.0 OHM coil.

If all you're doing is the ammeter, install and note the wires whilst checking, you may have to swap them for the meter to register correctly.

Hello guys, to clarify, the wiring in my dad's Model A resembles nothing like a Model A. There was not an ammeter in place before, and there are no wires for one. Using the regular Model A diagram is not using for this application.
