Default Disassembling speedometer gear "turtle"

This is for those who are trying to figure out (as I was) how to disassemble and rebuild the speedometer driven gear that mounts on the torque tube, otherwise known as the "turtle."

I kept reading about removing the end cap and some said to put a small hole in it, to which a screw could be threaded and used as a pulling point. Looking at mine, I saw there was already a small hole so I put a screw in and removed the end cap,
(see pic 1 below). This doesn't help because the shaft won't come out this way.

Then the Lord told me to try the other end. I thought I was breaking it at first, but it was actually coming out. Gently pry around this with a screw driver and the end comes off, (see pic 2 and 3 below).
Now the shaft can come out and the gear removed and replaced.

AlanD: That's what I was hoping you'd figure out when i gave you the parts description from snyder's. I've never had to take one apart myself. Thanks for posting for EVERYONE to see.

Thanks for the update. I'm going to have to take mine apart, so now I know exactly how to do it. Thanks, Harold

Update: Fixed!

With a new shaft and gear I rebuilt the turtle. That gear is tight going on the shaft so if you do this be prepared for some difficulty (especially if you have pre-greased it, I should have waited).

Now the speedometer is working steady - no more bouncing! Yay!

But the speedometer reads about 5 mph slower than I am driving. I was using a neat iphone app to give me a relative measure of my actual speed.

AlanD,
What app did you use to measure speed? I have used my Garmin GPS to check speed, but an app for iPhone would be more convenient.

It's a free app called Hans Schneider Speedometer.
I checked it in my modern car and it's usually accurate to + 1 mph.

just rebuilt one as well using an 18 tooth gear , not the std 19 ('31) to accommodate slow speedo. Repro gear is smaller and may have some slippage at torque tube speedo drivegear with paper gasket installed. May go back to the 19 tooth. Had to replace the end cap available from the vendors. There is a traffic app for I phones called Waze that has mph shown when the app is opened.

I dissembled the speedometer on my 1930 because it was reading slow and neither odometer worked. Managed to get the trip working and adjusted the calibration plate to read correctly. Maybe I was lucky but the speed matches my GPS.

Used this for directions.

Thanks for the education. Looks to me that total disassembly would give the best outcome since you can clean the housing real good.
