Replacement oil pump for 36 221 motor
I am going to put my original 221 back in my 36 but before I close up the oil pan I would like to replace the oil pump.
I am looking for recommendations on the best pump to get and from what vendor. Thanks |

I got a new M1 from Mac Vanpelt. since It's overhauled I saw no need for the longer high volume. Screen too, and I think I had to cut the baffle some.

Re: Replacement oil pump for 36 221 motor
I would suggest using the short body 8ba, M-19, OP with the truck pick up tube and screen. Most all the big name suppliers carry that combination...Drake, Carpenter, Speedway, Mac's, C&G just to name a few.

Re: Replacement oil pump for 36 221 motor
James-
Caution! Don't get carried away with a high pressure/high volume oil pump on your '36. The rear seal on this engine is only a primitive slinger not a rope seal like later flatheads. As a result, the engine cannot effectively control a high pressure oil flow at the rear of the engine without creating a nuisance oil leak. Been there, done that...... Hope this helps. Tom |

Re: Replacement oil pump for 36 221 motor
James, the oil pump I use in all of my 221 engines is the Melings M-19, 50#, with the truck pickup tube and screen. You may need to cut a section of the oil pan baffle out to clear the pickup screen. You may also need to set the height of the screen slightly above the inner bottom surface of the pan to allow proper clearance for the pump to pull the oil up. These M-19 pumps have worked well for me and I am getting ready to put one in my Avatar 5w coupe now. The one you don't want to use is the longer pumping gear version known as the M-15, 80#, unless you are building a racing engine with loose fit tolerance bearings. This is all just my opinion.

Re: Replacement oil pump for 36 221 motor
I wouldn't put a new or used pump in my engines unless I tested it. This is to important of a part and to hard to change. Remember they will all pump with just 2 or 3 turns with your fingers but internal slippage or a bad bypass valve will produce little or no pressure under load. G.M.

Good point G.M. Didn't you once post plans here for a relatively simple to make oil pump test fixture made from PVC plumbing pipe? I need to make a couple of these test fixtures.

Flatjack9, hard to see as the photo is dark. Is that a cutout section of a block you used?
