well its strike 3 for me trying to buy one off ePay. So, it looks as if i am going to need to employ my Blacksmithing skills and make one...
If any one has one would they be willing to tell me a few dimentions (size of material, and overall length) and/or perhaps share a good straight on photo (to show how much offset the head has) the clossest one i found on the internet shows me a good design but lacks in telling me the basic layout. Can anyone help??? or know of a better tool to get those darn horseshoe clips out when the spring is compressed. ~Adam |

can't help with dimensions, but i'd be interested in buying one if you get to a point where you have confidence in the ones you make. good luck. ..jack

You need to drive the guide down before pulling the clip or you'll just probably tear out the hole in the clip. You also need to be looking for a driver.

I used to have a 4-foot long 1 inch diameter bar that had been tapered down at the last 6 inches or so of one end with a grinder. The end then had as curve bent into it and a point just big enough on the end to fit the clip hole. The only bad thing about that bar was that a person could rip the hole out pretty easy if the clips were stuck in there. After that you needed the ALL POWER keeper extractor. Those will get near all of the most stuborn ones out. The ALL Power bars are getting harder to find these days. They have a heavily Knurled cam lever gripper on one end that grabs the whole tongue of the clip.

Look at the guide thru the spring coils. The guides have a round notch just beneath the top of the spring. Run your bar between the coils into the notch and try to pull the guide down.

Assuming that the heads are off, just hammer the valves down.

Here again, if the guides are really stuck, that end of the guide tip will break off.

That tool works for me everytime without pushing down the guide. Sometimes I put a bar on the end for more leverage.

If the valves are suck open, they are junk, so you might just as well cut off the heads and use a good penetrating oil to dissolve the carbon buildup, drive the guide down, pull the clip and then push the guide back up and out

If the valve is up off the seat and stuck just hammer them down about 1/8 and remove the clip .Some times the head of the valve will pop right off if you hit it on one side then soak as needed with penatrent of choice then hammer down remove clip then use proper tool to lift the guide out... WARNING make surt the lifter is on the heal of the cam before you try to tap it down

The best tool I have found is a bar about 1 1/2 ft long with a knurled thing on the end, you push it over the retainer clip end and pull up. Since it gets the whole tab, you seldom ever pull out of a clip and believe me, it will pull those clips. Those things do show up on ebay from time to time. I also have one as pictured that will work if the guides are not stuck too bad and it does not spring when you whack it.
