Looks like I will be pulling my engine for some repair work. I need to get an engine stand that is Model A friendly and does not cost an arm and a leg. Any recomendations?
Also do I need the adapter that bolts to the water outlet and 2 pan bolts? or will the engine safely bolt up at the end of the block like a V8. Is the adapter a convience or a safety requirement? If needed, who makes the blue one that I see in some members pictures that has tubing vs a flat plate for more access to the block? I know that some use Harbor Freight stuff but when it comes to things like engine stands and cherry pickers I must admit that I am gun shy on using cheap chinese products. Thanks for the advise. |

I use their engine hoist No problems. same as the Engine stand, but you need the adapter The Blue one from Brattons, Snyders,Sacramento Vintage Ford or check with the local Model A Club Members, I am sure you could borrow one.

We make the blue tubular adapter that you spoke of. It makes it easier to work on the engine, as you can assemble the engine, flywheel, clutch and transmission all at once.

The stands available at alot of discount auto supply places will work fine. But use one of the blue adpators. Easier to assemble the engine/clutch/ ect.

You can assemble the engine with out the adapter but cannot put fly wheel housing, flywheel and clutch on. If you have a hoist you can assemble those componets. One way to save a little money.

I'm with you on this one. The side adapter, IMHO, actually can make some things a little more difficult to assemble. I posted on this a while back.

I would definately use the adaptor. Then you can turn the engine down to install and DIAL IN the flywheel cover. I also don't like to support the engine off the end. I feel it's much better and safer to use the side adaptor.

You can make your own adapter for little or nothing with the parts that come with the engine stand, some bolts, and angle iron:

Thanks for all the replies! I like the look and ease of the adapter sold by Bert's. Looks like I am going to try my crack repair with the engine in the car first to try and save the cost of an engine hoist and stand. However if I end up needing to pull it I plan on going the adapter route.
Also good to know that it seems that quite a few have good luck with the harbor freight hoist and lifts. Good to know that it is a reasonable option. I know that from time to time they do have good sales on those items. Anybody want to chime in on what brands to deffinatly stay away from? Thanks for the help. |

For an engine stand the 4 leg one is more stable than the 3 leg stand, plus with 2 arms at the bottom it's easier to place a drip pan across them.
