Question Rims

Hi Guys, I know my rims are 14" x 6" with the 4 1/2 inch bolt pattern. How do you measure the backspacing ? From inside to rim, or inside to the outside of the tire ? My car is a 1959 Ford Fairlane 500 Thank you inadvance,Pat-New York.

  • Lay the wheel on a flat surface, front side facing down.
  • Lay the yardstick across the top of the rim, from one side to the other. If there is a tire on the wheel you must then lay a flat edge the correct size of the rim, from one side to the other, which will lay flat onto the edge of the rim, not the tire.
  • Measure the distance from the inside mounting surface of the wheel, where the lug nut holes are, which mates against the axel hub on the car, to the lower edge of your flat ruler/stick lying across the top edge of the rim.
This measurement is your "Back Space" measurement.

Here's a great tech article too: http://www.streetdreams.org/tech.php

Smile Re: Rims

hey, im going to horn in on this conversation and tell something you probably already know, but the less back spacing the farther the wheels will stick out from the drum, if you want to fill up the wheel well thats the way to go, on the other hand the more back space the farther the tire will be inside the wheel well, on after market wheels you can get almost any back spacing you want
