Default Another timing question

I have an A dist. on my B block. With an A dist, should I time it at TDC on #1 and disregard the timing pin or should I use it just like timing an A engine as I understand it would be 19 degrees off. When I get my B dist. with auto advance, should I then go to the timing pin on the cam gear and not worry about the piston position and do I center the rotor in #1?
I've looked at the various web sites and they're a bit confusing.
Thanks for your thoughts and suggestions,
Pete

I would pull number one plug and get the piston to top dead center. Then set the timing to that for now.

If you have an "A" distributor and a "B" front timing cover, there is an easy way to get it very close assuming you can still feel the notches at the spark lever at the steering wheel.

First, check that you have full travel of the upper distributor plate by use of the spark lever (as should always be done). If I recall correctly, when aligning the timing pin with a "B" cover it places the camshaft and distributor 9-1/2 degrees advanced. When moving the spark lever off the full retarded position there are ten notches. Each notch will be approximately 2 degrees. If you move the lever off it's seat 5 notches you will be advanced approximately 10 degrees will nearly match the timing mark location at 9-1/2 degrees. Setting the points to break at this position will essentially match the position of the cam and when you complete the process and finally retard the lever back too it's seat you will be very near TDC as you would be with the standard "A" configuration and process.

Thanks Marco,
I'm going to copy you're instructions and keep em handy. Right now with new rings, valve springs it's pretty stiff so I hope I'm close prior to intital startup.
