Does anyone have the exact colors for the 1929 New Mexico passenger car license plate?
I googled the colors but I read cream background with red letters, but I need the shades of cream and red. I found a original plate but it’s painted obviously by an amateur and wrong colors. Would like to put it on my 29 special coupe when done proper. |

You could contact Brian Mabry at Finish Your Plates. He professionally restores license plates and does excellent work.
https://www.finishyourplates.com [email protected] He might be willing to tell you the info you're looking for and would be happy to give you a quote for doing a restoration. A friend of mine had his plates restored by Brian and they looked better than new.

Some auto paint store employees are better than others. I took my 1930 VT plate to O'Reilly and the kid said they need a perfectly flat area the size of a playing card for the scanner to get the right code--no such area on any license plate. I went back a while later and spoke with a guy old enough to be the first kid's g'pa, and he said let's give it a try. He produced two small containers of paint--one labeled Toyota- which are so close to original you can't tell the difference

FWIW, I just received my repainted 1931 SC "The Iodine State" plate from Brian Simpson in Harrisburg, NC. This is the second vintage plate I've had him repaint/restore...and both are absolutely beautiful, spot-on colors, very hard, very crisp powder-coat. I couldn't be happier.
Plus, it was only $65.00, shipped (I'm only one state over). Very nice guy. He prefers text messaging. I don't know if he would divulge his colors (or if he's ever done a NM plate). I do know he talked about doing a lot of research to get them just "right". Brian Simpson 704-807-3262 ([email protected])

'The Iodine State'? Never heard that. I guess it's not a selling point any more.... Thanks!

Pre iodineized salt. Some scientist showed that SC produce had higher levels of iodine than any other state. That prompted someone to sell the idea to the state gov't as a marketing plan...I think it lasted from '29 to '33...when Iodized salt made the point moot.
It makes for a good conversational plate!

Brian has a youtube channel under Plate Flip. https://www.youtube.com/@PlateFlip I wish he'd learn to weld, but his paint jobs are the absolute best in the industry. He's been doing it for decades and makes it look easy, which it certainly is not. I have seen lots of terrible plate repaint jobs even on show cars. Watch and learn how he does it. Its just paint, mess it up and do over until you get it right. |
