A different truck build thread

Some of you will recall a photo I posted about 5 years ago depicting a somewhat crude wooden model of a '32 ford stakebed that I once owned. Some 40 years ago, the day before my son's 3rd birthday I made a sketch of the '32 and constructed the toy from scrapwood. It remains in good shape on a shelf in his long abandoned bed room, although it's now missing it's rear duals, which I stole yesterday to use for my grandson's toy Foyota.
Yesterday morning about ten am I decided to build a model toy of my wacky foyota project. I removed the stakebed's wheels so I could work out a scale, carefully propping the rear on a wood block and setting a plastic WW2 walkie talkie in front of the bare rear axle. With this wheel at 2 3/4" the scale would be loosely, 1/12. Perfect! Easy as they get, I drew a quick sketch of the jailbar foyota, which I had parked close to the shop. Keep in mind these toy trucks are not perfectly to scale or highly detailed. My hope is they look like something an old grandpa woulda built during lean times, with what he had on hand. Since I'm now semi-retired I feel ok if this one takes two days, but I'm feeling the heat, on shipping to Seattle. Last evening at six when my wife called me in to supper, I got the ol' "Why do you always wait til the last second?" lecture. Sheesh, Last Second? I've got like ten days and I still have to make some kinda furniture for his sister's American Girl doll (half day easy)...Anyway here's the truck before I took the wheels. (I found some nice 2 3/4" similar from a hubley truck on ebay so ordered them last night about 11 pm. for relacements. Yikes) And a picture of the early stages. It currently has a bed, a hood/cowl, front and rear fenders and I just milled out some weathered bedwood, which will go down in the next ten minutes. Stay tuned , I only have until six, so the race is on. Ho Ho Ho

I love the model!!! A little more off topic stuff: I'm heavily into A's but lurk here everyday. My currant model project involves converting two Jim Beam whiskey decanter Model A police patrol wagons into a replica of the MAFFI (Model A Ford Foundation, Inc) 1931 AA school bus now being used to transport visitors around the Gilmore museum campus in Hickory Corners, Michigan. It's a long term project, a couple years+. I totally disassembled the two plastic bodies I removed from the porcelain bottles and am morphing them into one longer body. I had to cut the porcelain decanter right behind the Model A cowl. I notched it on the 4 square corners with my Dremel & it cracked perfectly where I wanted! Yes, the decanters were empty. No photos as I haven't figured out how to post them yet.

Had some visitors this afternoon, But I came close to completion by supper.. Mail goes out tomorrow at 2pm, so I can drill some holes to mount windshield, and both bumpers in the morning. Gotta figure out some grill bars too. Front bumper was a slice off the side of some old 1/2" steel hydraulic line, rear bumper from a scissor-lock off an old wood stepladder. Windshield is small square stock, a shiskabob skewer. Headlights are short 3/8" carraige bolts. Steering wheel 1/8 and 3/16 rod. Had trouble finding 4 matching 1/4-20 axle bolts. I drilled holes in maple axle blocks undersized and thread them in. Tailgate glued in fixed. Burning out on this, but a pretty fun exercise.

Well, My wife just reminded me that my daughter's family is celebrating Christmas in Califormia, but they'll be on the island for a week at New Years. Suddenly it's no rush. Maybe I will try to paint the coat hanger grill bars and headlight rings in tacoma cream. Just as well, because there's a lot to do around the place this week, like move another cord of wood from our adjacent property to the woodshed. After that I start prepping the lumber for 12 custom doors from reclaimed lumber headed up to Mink Island off of British Columbia. I have about half of it loaded into the '59 F350, but needed a break. Never needed on of those til I hit about 70. Sheesh.
Pics show the windshield, bumper, grill bars and safety rails all welded up and installed. Somehow I made the nose too narrow for 15 grill bars, so she got 9. Actually looks more like a 40-41 big truck nose now. Long, been my favorite, but pickup track width narrow to haul plywood. I see I forgot to install rear bumper but now I have all the time in the world.
