Hi Guys, i developed a birdie under the hood, and i figured something needed greese. I installed aleakless water pump a few hundred miles ago , but i never greesed it. it was from a rebuild guy at a swap meet .i don't remember him telling me it had to be greesed. i asumed wrong, i put greese in the rear and i think i hit the front too. it got a little quite at first and then after a few drives i noticed it quiet. so how often should i greese it and should i doo both?

Use a waterproof grease in the front and a regular grease in the back. Do not grease the front too much or grease will get into the radiator and clog up the tubes.

i have an fyi.

when joe back yard mechanic does a rebuild on a model A water pump 9 times out of ten he will not line up the rear bushing properly. he will drive the bushing in and it will block the hole in the casting where the grease is pumped onto the shaft.

if that back grease fitting will not accept grease this is probably the issue.

i have had to fix so many pumps that have had the bushing installed wrong.

yes use the correct grease.

for my original water pump I grease it about every 500 miles with Blue marine lithium grease. Back the packing nut completely off the bushing and grease only enough to see grease appear at the front of the bushing. then reinstall nut, snug it up.

I have the same situation.

Bought a "leakless" water pump from a national parts vendor that I purchase from regularly. I put it on the car and it looked very nice. Appeared to have roller bearings in both ends, but I did not disassemble to inspect. Pump came with no instructions. I have greased the front bearing a couple of times. Nothing seems to go in the rear bearing, but I remain uncertain what I have and what the grease schedule is.

Why are they advertised as "greaseless" water pumps if they need grease?

Anybody have suggestions?

Unfortunately there are several rear bushings/cartridges and it is difficult to tell what you have. Snyder's has three different ones, Leakless greaseless, sealed, packing, packing. Take your choice.

I always stay with the original design, then I know what I have. You pack it, you grease it and you are on your way.

A leakless is going to leak at some point while on the road and you can't repack it.
