Stupid Accessory I couldn't resist

Spent a couple of hours this morning installing a new accessory on my 1962 Galaxie 500XL: a period-correct FM-converter. Probably paid too much for it $37 + tax and shipping. Just had to have it though. Yeah, I know I could have purchased a perfect fit am/fm/mp3/bluetooth radio but I wanted to keep the original AM radio. Note the CONELRAD triangles at 640 and 1240 dial (I've never seen an aftermarket radio that has these.)


It works. Just like it did back in the day.

It's period correct. It works. It allows you to keep your original radio. It was priced very reasonably. It was easy to install. It looks great. Nothing "stupid" about that at all. It's a "win" in my book! About 25 yrs. ago, I had one in a '57 Fairlane. It was quite the conversation piece at shows & cruise nights. Enjoy! F F

Now you just need a reverb or a 4 track deck. Or both. Maybe even find a set of the “organ pipe” rear speakers. J C Whitney must have sold a million of each.

When I bought my 64 Fairlane (now gone), it just had a the stock radio. I did the same as you - I bought a converter. And it worked good.


I had the same "must have" item for my 56 Bird. I saw the factory fog lights that went in the bumper guards and that spoiled me. After going crazy looking for them, I finally found them. They cost way more than your 37.00.

Now you're talking! A period correct JC Whitney catalog would be the perfect addition. I remember there was a "light bar" or "color organ" too.

Sorry I am a bit young for knowing about these. But now that I do, I will have to get one for my 57 wagon! Off to swim in the Bay....

When I was a kid, I installed a factory AM-FM in a '65 Mustang. When I sold the car, I took the radio out and sold the radio separately. I think I got $900.00 for it and that was a long time ago. They were harder than hell to find even 40-years ago. I wish I would have kept it; I would have installed it in my '66 GT-350. I also had a '66 convertible with a factory 8-track, I didn't keep that either, At least I kept the Shelby I bought in 1982, I couldn't afford it now. Back when people were still driving early Mustangs for transportation I always stopped and looked inside everyone to see what options they had. I never saw a factory 1965 AM-FM radio except for the one I had. I saw a few 1966 Mustangs with factory 8-tracks in them. 99% of the time there was just the plain old AM radio in there. Unless somebody had hacksawed out the dash and added an aftermarket unit. Don't forget to cut big holes in the doors or rear panels for the speakers to. I hated to see that butchery even when I was a kid.
