OT: dental torque

Learned something today-returned to the oral surgeon to check whether the implant he placed in the maxilla a few months ago was sufficiently locked into the bone to accept the prosthetic tooth. He whips out - a teeny torque wrench (!), applies 35 Ncm, and bob's your uncle. Also turns out you can get one of these little beauties on Amazon for $45 (maybe not the highest quality). I have a couple of Snap-on click type torque wrenches, may need to add one of these to my collection. Who knew?

Yep, my Oral Surgeon used the tiny torque wrench on my two implants recently. They both passed the torque test. Problem now was when my Dentist went to remove the healing abutments to install the two locating pins for impression taking, he stripped out one of the healing abutments. Back to Oral Surgeon to try to remove the healing abutment and he ended up having to drill then install a tiny easy out to remove. Problem now is he ended up removing the implant so back to square one. Kind of like working on old Ford's, sometimes things just do not go as planned.

Yes and they should give you more than one of those little wrenches!

So true, TJ. Especially when you consider the extra pain and suffering of the "easy out"
(which is never easy) procedure! Down my way complete implant procedure is $5K for one tooth.

Yep, my solo implant was $3600.

Same here. I've had six implants installed - one failed and had to be redone but no charge for that one. I asked my dentist if he'd give me a ride in his Lamborgini

No question implants are expensive and can be problematic, but I think still better than the alternative-a bridge, or a toothless gap. Bruce, I feel for you, hope your repeat procedure works out.
After bilateral prosthetic hips and now two dental implants, I'm feeling pretty bionic

yes Adam, i too have prosthetic hips one done in 2013,other is a yr.old 14th this month. at almost 74 i still play disc golf again. i see you still ride motorcycles. my hips were destroyed by osteoarthritis but accelerated by riding bicycles and Mcycles over 50 yrs. oh, but sooo much fun. Tom.

only could stand to watch the steet DDS in India for about 30 sec. not much on sterile technique. hell my ortho surgeon that replaced my hip joints has me taking 2000mg antibiotic before any procedure including dental cleaning/procedure. Tom.

Farmertom, my left hip was done in 2004, the right in 2016, both still going strong; I selected my orthopedists very carefully-guys I had been referring my own patients to for many years. Like finding a talented machinist for your project! At 77 I still love riding motorcycles, hope to get a few more years in before the inevitable.

Adam,i'm curious had your ortho surgeon have you take 2000mg of antibiotic before any procedure from head to toe such as dental or colonoscopy? Tom.

Tom, neither the AAOS (American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons) nor the ADA (American Dental Association) recommend any pre-dental antibiotic prophylaxis any longer-this used to be a universal recommendation for many years, but has been found to have no beneficial effect. Good dental hygiene, however is imperative. Likewise, the recommendations for other procedures (colonoscopy, cystoscopy) no longer suggest pre-procedure antibiotics. As a retired doc, I've looked at this pretty carefully (but of course, consult your own doc!!). (There is a universal recommendation for antibiotics before the hip surgery itself is done, though-that's a different issue).

Adam,Thank you for your insight on the matter of antibiotic prophylaxis. the first surgeon,which is now retired,wanted the antibiotic to be taken for dental and any other procdures only for a year after.the surgeon that just did my right hip a year ago wants a lifetime of antibiotics.which i'm not crazy about.it's a teaching hosp.situation,liability consideration? I may at some point talk to ortho dept about matter. ofcouse,no mention of matter discussed here on the barn. Tom.
