Idler Gear Removal

I'm tearing down an 8ba block in preparation for a trip to the machine shop, going to see if it's good or a boat anchor. Anyhow, I need to remove the oil pump idler gear, I threaded a bolt into the gear and gave some tugs with my rather small slide hammer..... didn't budge. Just want to verify this is the correct method for removal? Thanks.

Best I can remember, it should slide off the shaft using a couple of screwdrivers as levers. While you're at it, check the bushing to make sure it's not worn allowing the gear to rock back and forth on the shaft.

Correction to my previous post. I seem to remember now that I had to use a larger slide hammer to remove the gear shaft. Apologize for the misinformation.

I have to thank you, and laugh at myself with you directing me to a thread of MY OWN from 2 years ago when I was facing the installation of said gear. Guess that shows the extent of my memory. Well I need to find a BIG socket or heavier slide hammer. Thanks!

To remove that gear I use my KR Wilson tool.

Simple solution. Buy a new one. The one you already have will appear almost immediately

Works every time for me. I shouldn't complain at this point in my life BUTT, was under the 49 doing yearly. Needed a wrench, got out from under, went to toolbox AND WONDERED WHY I WAS THERE... Jeez

Reminds me of my last few years working on fork lift trucks. Working on a truck at my stall with my tools directly behind me, I would turn around to get the needed tool and forget what I was after. I would stand and look into the tool cabinet trying to remember what I was doing to the truck. Many times I had to turn around and see what I was doing to determine which tool I was after. This malady was going on 20 years ago so you can only imagine what I deal with now! LOL NRTF (not really that funny)

The Wilson tool is just a stout cylinder with a bolt to pull that gear. You could probably rig up something with a bar, some spacers, and a bolt to pull it. It’s just pressed in.

Have to dig it up, but I made one using part of a Model T running board brace. Worked well.

Well guys, I took this block to the machine shop for hot tank, bake and mag, and decided to "delegate" a couple additional tasks: remove the front oil gallery plug and the idler gear. I have done both before, but this time around I'm going to let someone else have the fun.
