I would contact VanPelt and see if he has plans for a shipping container, or one he would rent or sell you. http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_home.htm

Fedex may be OK if you are careful and do everything right. Make sure that you have a proper description of what you're shipping and adequate insurance. I shipped a set of done "Triple-Nickel" early hemi heads with them a few years ago, and they never got to the destination, less than 150 miles away. To make a long story short, after going back and forth with them many times, they dropped off one greasy SBC smogger head at my shop and called it good. My only recourse at that time would have meant taking them to small claims court, but because I was lazy and didn't cross my "t"'s and dot my "i"'s in the beginning, it would have been a tough slog.

From the way things went down, I have alway suspected pilferage by an employee who knew his stuff, but it is just speculation on my part.

I pack transmissions in a 20” square heavy cardboard box and attach to a plywood base with LOTS of cardboard and paper so the transmission cannot move around. I’ve shipped numerous via UPS with no issues.

Years ago, I sold a Ford Top Loader 4-speed Trans on eBay I built a wooden pallet and bolted the trans using the trans mounts with bolts and nylon lock nuts. There was no way it was going anywhere, but in addition I banded the trans down with steel bands. The guy calls and said all he received was an empty wooden pallet. I called UPS to complain, and they said, "this happens all the time, will just have to pay the guys claim". The guy posted a positive response on eBay before he even called me to say he had received an empty pallet. That trans was shipped to a nice beach home in Malibu Beach, CA. I doubt seriously if the UPS driver delivered an empty pallet. If you do ship something, make sure you have them sign for the delivery to help protect yourself. I had three false claims selling stuff on eBay, about 1 out of 10 sales. Apparently, car guys are made up of 10% thieves. The trans was the last time I sold something on eBay, I'd rather throw it in the trash then deal with that.

Last I knew, Fastenal doesn't ship east to west or vice versa. The Mississippi River is the dividing line or there about.

2 things I bought in the past came Panama freight; it was seller choice but both things showed up fine with a bill of lading that had to be signed. That was years ago though.

If your shipping a little three speed from an early ford build a wood box with scerws and pack it solid with cardboard. Remove and send the stick sepeartly. Do not say what it is in the package or write it on the package. The theives don't open things just to see what's in them (yet) as far as I know.Tim

I sell quite a few rebuilt T5 trans a year and my rebuilder has a triple strength cardboard box he lines with luan 1/8 inch plywood with a 2x8 block on each end, the trans packed in a garbage bag placed in the box and the box shot full of spray foam insulation. So far UPS has not destroyed one.
