One thing that really struck me with this photo is how much headroom the driver has in that truck. Is the roof that much taller on the trucks than a coupe or is that a very short driver? The front fender looks like two different fenders were grafted together.
I enjoy seeing old commercial vehicles because I think it paints a better historical picture. Along those lines, here is a photo of a tow truck that my boss’s grandfather used for his junkyard that he ran. Not an A, but I still wish I had it. |

Looks like a Packard radiator shell. Love the slogan “If it rolls or flies I have it.”
Also, note the several phone numbers. No “putting a call on hold” when another call comes in. In parts of Pennsylvania there were two competing phone companies, Keystone and Bell. They were not linked. You could only call phones on your system. Many businesses had both a Keystone phone number and a Bell number.

Headroom was ample because most folks were a bit shorter than now. that cab might be taller than the later A trucks as they were a leftover style from the T days. That front fender shows a normal area of fender splitting that most restored cars have had, and were fixed.

Just checked the dimensions, the early pickups were quite a bit taller than even early coupes. A full 3-3/4” taller cab than a 30-31 coupe. Ah, I see the split in the fender now. I didn’t realize the edge was lifting up on the front.

Years ago I was fleaing in western Mass and stopped at a shop with a Packard wrecker outside. They were rebuilding it. I asked the price for no avail I was a Packard to start with. Many years later, the Packard wrecker showed up in the wrecker Museum all painted in white ... I wish!!! Later owned a '29 seven passenger touring Packard. what a dream driver. My buddy here abouts is on his way to The Old Carr Show with his 25 Packard!!

Who knows, might have been the same truck. That’s not far from my neck of the woods. But there were many others, I’m sure. I shudder to think how many of those big early cars got cut up to make trucks.

I’ve seen photos of tow trucks made from Rolls-Royces. I seem to remember South Africa but not sure. Here’s one in England I just found online:
