I just went through a starting problem with my '32 59AB, 12 volt system described in this thread, https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=340187.
Today I was finishing up an ignition rewiring to 7mm solid core wires. With the old resistance wires and now the solid core, car starts and runs fine. The problem now is that a digital voltmeter I have down at the bottom of the firewall now is reading 0 volts when the engine is running, about 12.7 volts when not. - I checked wiring connections to the coil and generator. I then flashed the Ford voltage regulator, removing the Field wire and touching it to the Battery terminal. I got a small spark but voltage is still reading zero. - I checked the plug for the voltage meter and with engine running, I got 5 to 6V - Checking the terminals when running on the voltage regulator with a VOM: - Field, little over 5V and stable - Generator, right around 6V and stable - Battery, bouncing all over the place up to 18V then down to ~12V - Before flashing the regulator, all the terminals were bouncing around quickly - Amp meter is showing charging - Battery fully charged Need suggestions please. Glenn,
Digital voltmeters don't perform well with ignition points while the engine is running. You need an analog voltmeter for what you're doing. As for your voltage regulator, I wouldn't advise attempting to make adjustments unless you're fully schooled on its functions and methods of adjustments. If you find that you just can't resist the temptation, you should know that regulators are highly vulnerable to changes in temperature, so only mess with it while your engine and engine compartment is at full operating temperature with the hood closed. You might find it a bit uncomfortable in there, but then again, you just couldn't resist. ![]()

As suggested, don’t change anything until you get an analog volt meter . Too much noise with solid wires , points etc . Could be just a coincidence that the led is not working or leds are directional .

I connected the power wire to the suppressor, black to ground/earth and the yellow wire to a terminal on the voltage gauge. The other terminal on the gauge is also wired to earth/ground.
