Does anyone know why this 32-34? /36? Window Regulator Repair Kit from Ecklers comes with a spring inside the housing?
Eckler EK-32-68150-1 I cannot yet post picture or link. ![]() The regulator I took apart had no spring. There was a separate piece of metal fabricated inside the housing presuming to glide better when cranking. The spring I do have is on the interior of the handle behind the escutcheon and the panel. I am trying to repair the damaged pin and small gear on my Front Passenger Door 36 Ford 5 Wnd. Couple. I am concerned about removing as it may be difficult to impossible to put back in. |

There is a spring inside the originals, it is usually stuck in the grease inside the cup that holds the parts together. The original spring puts some minor tension on the interior parts to prevent noise and take up some slack.
My Eckler Cat. does not show the part number you reference in your post. |

32-68150-1 comes up on the eckler website as a window regulator repair kit w/6 tooth gear.
With due respect to Terry, IMHO the spring inside the housing in combination with the spider on the gear and the slots on the handle shaft act as a clutch. This keeps the window in position when not winding the crank. There were at least 4 variations of regulator clutch housings common to the 1928-34 years. I have seen "beehive" housings (like the reproduction) with two different pilot bearing diameters, "tuna can" variations, and variations that use rivets and variations that use tabs to attach the housing. Most likely this is due to Ford sourcing the regulator assembly from various manufacturers who each built them differently. The handle shaft could be steel, or "die cast" (which is often half melted away due to corrosion). The reproduction is "Industria Argentina" and may be "C*R*A*P*, at least two steps below the worst Vintique part. I have seen some OK ones, and ones where the machining on the shaft is so poor you would not want to use it as a fish line weight. One good touch is the pilot bearing is an insert which can be reversed so it will work on the two most common bearing sizes. |

I've found that repair kit to be useless; poor quality, and incorrect style/fit.
Best approach is to find a NOS, NORS, or good used regulator. I've also used 4 door rear regulators as donors for the winder part; but like Karl says; you need to use matching regulators as there are several types of Ford regulators not to mention the aftermarket regulators sold back in the day. Thank you for the reply. All replies welcome and helpful. My take away is the spring does belong in the housing. I have found the machining of the parts is very poor. Clutch makes sense now, yet, I do think the spring does provide some sort of tension front to back inside of the housing. Test & Verify, haha. The gear component has a projectile 3/8" wide maybe, that can fit into 1 of 2 openings on the housing. One a snug fit, the other fit with play on it. I have not figured out yet with 100% certainty the snug fit is the proper setup. This kit comes with rivets. I can't use as the gear is riveted in, in the way and not taking that out. I think I will have to spot weld housing. If I can find original or NOS I will. Right now trying to save it. |
