Default Oil filter emergency bypass

Soooo

I have a 1950 Ford Custom 239 V8 with oil filter; after the most recent oil change I had a very hard time getting the filter housing to seal and only after reinstalling the oil seal did I get the oil to remain in the engine and off the shop floor.

My question is: IF say I were on a road trip and encountered an oil leak at the filter housing IS there a way to bypass the oil filter housing OR stop the oil flow into the housing?

After the leak I had I would like to think I could get it to reseal BUT just in case, hoping there is a known way to isolate the filter housing at least to get to a location that would better suited to repair than the side of the road or is ending up on a flatbed being towed my only option.

THANKS IN ADVANCE

I suppose you could install a valve on the inlet, but shouldn't be a problem if the correct gasket is used. Filter manufacturers typically supply two different gaskets to accomodate the different canister manufacturers. The top bolt gasket being another matter, should be a fiber gasket, and does take a beating what with the pressure of the bolt to seal correctly.

Shouldn't but it has been and the filters I have all have two gaskets one obviously is not the correct one the other would not seal.

Was hoping for and looking for anyone that has figured out a workaround until any leak could be fixed correctly.

I understand your concern but have never had an issue with mine unless I didn't get the gasket in right. Once it's sealed it's a done deal until you open it again. What type of a canister do you have? There were some that were more difficult to work with than others.

If it is the stock oil filter the car will run ok without it. If you wanted peace of mind that if it were to spring a leak (although that is unlikely) you could carry a 1/4 npt plug and the correct tools to remove the oil filter feed from the block and replace it with a plug.
But in reality you could just carry a spare filter and seal. (and the tools to fit the new seal.
funnily enough I made some seals and have used them on my sedan.
Mart.

As goofy as it may sound, I have reused the old gasket with a 100% success rate.

Not goofy at all. When I was young and working at the local repair shop the shop owner said to do just that as long as the gasket looked good. Never had one leak, even if they were hard. I still do it that way.

I have changed oil 23 times in 23 years and have been using the same gasket in my 47.
