34 Ford Rear View Mirror Reinstall
My rear view mirror was loose so I took it down before it fell down. Now to put it back up the holes above are to big for the screws. I want to take the piece shown down to see how I can reattach the mirror.
Question #1: What is the cover called that is hiding the windshield wiper motor and that the mirror hangs from? Question #2: If I take the cover off are there any surprises there that I have to be aware of? It seems like its mostly solid. Is it all wood? Will it go back fairly easily? Thanks in advance before I screw something up. By the way "Clunker" is 90 years old this year. I took her for a 20 mile ride yesterday and she ran like she was brand new. Tom I'm not sure the attachments will post. If it doesn't I'll try another way. |

Re: 34 Ford Rear View Mirror Reinstall
I've seen the cover called a "windshield header trim panel" Part# 40-701470. It's made of sheet metal steel, covered in the napped cotton that matches the headliner fabric.
The screws along the top hold it in place. You don't need to remover the sun visors, they are screwed into clinch nuts that are permanently attached to the backside of the metal panel. It should come off and on fairly easily. |

Thank you, Leadfoot4U. It took 26 minutes for me to get an answer to my question. That is so cool. What a great website.

Re: 34 Ford Rear View Mirror Reinstall
Another problem has developed. Since removing the windshield header trim panel I realize that I have the wrong screws to reattach the mirror and also, I can't get the holes to line up.
The screws that I had saved were wood type screws. Once the panel was off I could see that I needed bolts to thread into the existing nuts mounted above. Does anyone know the size of the bolts? Also, the header is back held in place using the 4 screws that I took off along the top. It looks as though I put it back correctly only the holes for the mirror bolts don't line up. The header piece bottom seems to have to come back away from the windshield around 3/8 to a half inch. What's wrong? |

You may have to loosen the screws that hold the header panel, line up the mirror holes with a drift punch then retighten the screws. It will be easier to mount the mirror with the head off, put the mirror glass on afterwards using an offset screwdriver. Yes, 10/32 screws mount the mirror.

Re: 34 Ford Rear View Mirror Reinstall
It's been a while; but it seems to me the flange on the front edge overhangs the inner panel and if you have it behind, it would account for the misalignment.
There are two more machine screws that go from the bottom up besides the mirror screws, also there are two wood screws behind the side moldings. |
