dana 41 outer axle bearing upgrade?
Howdy boys, working on grandads '48 F1 with a Dana 41 rear differential. Question on the outer bearing for the axle shafts. I have Timken number 514003, which is a sealed bearing. Is it a replacement for what all of the parts schematics I have looked at, show as a tapered bearing? The Dana 41 was used in the early jeeps also. I've looked, but can't find anything definitive. And, for some unknown reason, I seem to have discarded the old bearings. Damn it, I usually keep everything until it's finished. Must have had my head in the wrong area that day. Thanks guys!

Re: dana 41 outer axle bearing upgrade?
The Dana 41in the early Jeeps had a tapered hub, guessing the bearing is different. M series Studebakers had a 41, but I believe those had tapered hubs as well.

Re: dana 41 outer axle bearing upgrade?
Pete, I have this schematic, it shows the tapered bearing. My axles have the flange on the axle, no taper. I have sealed bearings. They must be correct for my application. Wish I could find a schematic for the Dana 41 I have. They must be out there. Thanks guys!

Re: dana 41 outer axle bearing upgrade?
9” ford bearings I believe. The jeep uses Dana 41 but different axles with taper.

Re: dana 41 outer axle bearing upgrade?
The Mercury 8M-1225-B part number is one of the common numbers for the Dana 41/44 outer axle shaft bearings. They are ball bearings that utilize a race retainer sleeve. Ford developed a new part number in 1952 that was 2C-1225-A and it mentions using those in muddy environments since they have better seals but they are interchangeable.
A person needs the Ford truck chassis parts catalog to find parts for the F1 pickup. The Dana 44 changed a bit in 1950 and then again for the F100 pickups in 1953 but a lot of parts are interchangeable. The Mercury rear axles used from 1949 through 1951 have different spring pads but are otherwise the same. Last edited by rotorwrench; 01-03-2024 at 05:18 PM. |
