41 p/u hood latch differences
Hi guys. I am hoping one of you can send me a nice close pic of the hood latch side of a 41 V-8 truck. This truck was originally a 6cyl truck. I have the correct mount for the hood but it isnt just a bolt in as you can see. The two upper bolts align, but the lowers have nowhere to go. What does this area look like on a v-8 hood. Does it just continue like the rest and not have the V- notch? Hoping to have this on this weekend but would really need some reference photos to see. Any help extremely appreciated.

Re: 41 p/u hood latch differences
Welcome to the world of six cylinder . I have a 41 I six truck with a dying 8BA in it. The differences I've found so far are the lower pan and chin under the grill. The latch plate on the top of the grill, the latch itself and the hood. I'm not sure because I don't have one but I think the splash pan around the engine would be different also. I'm just finishing up my 255 V8 for my 41 but I will leave all the six tin in place that I can so that down the road someone could take it back to original if they wanted. The only tin you have to change that I know of is the lower pan under the radiator. Tim

Re: 41 p/u hood latch differences
Vanspeed, you have the wrong upper latch for your pickup. The upper latch for the '41 pickup is triangular shaped. The lower brace is also different. Both upper and lower pieces are one year only. I would suggest you spend $10 and get the 40-41 Ford pickup book from the Early Ford V-8 Club. It's a small book, but full of great facts on the difference between the two years of pickups. The '41 hood pieces including the handle are not easy to find and can be pricey. Since you are building the truck it might be easier at this point to use the '40 pieces including the '40 pickup hood to complete your project.

Re: 41 p/u hood latch differences
I agree with TJ’s advice to buy the Two Great Trucks book. It does state in that book that the triangular latch in the hood was for the 6 cylinder. However, late in production, they used the 6 cyl hood for both the 6 and V8. My V8 pickup is an example of that.
You can use the 6 cyl triangle latch if you still have it. The latch you have pictured is the V8 only.

Re: 41 p/u hood latch differences
Are you using the '40 standard (passenger car/pickup) lower grille brace or do you have the lower grille brace for the 6 cylinder pickup? If you have the later 6 cylinder grille brace it will not match up with the early upper latch brace that you want to use. Luckily the early lower brace is easy to find vs the later '41 brace.

Re: 41 p/u hood latch differences
I have the lower grill brace for a V-8. Only thing 6 cyl I have is the actual hood. That is why I would like a pic of the flange area of the hood where the brace mounts on the side. Thinking of cutting out the V notch that that the 6 cyl hood has and fabricating a new piece that make it seamless. That is why I would like a pic to make sure what I do looks correct.

Re: 41 p/u hood latch differences
Vanspeed: I'm truly sorry for the delay.
It took me over an hour to get the photos from my phone to my computer. Then it took me over an hour and two reloads on fordbarn and I still don't have the photos uploaded onto a reply for you. I have the pictures, I just need to get them uploaded. I'll try at home later when I get home. That'll be around 4:30 to 5:00. Again I apology. Mike |

Re: 41 p/u hood latch differences
Vanspeed: I'll try this again at home on a spectrum wifi hookup.
Here are the three pictures I took of my 41 pickup hood. The first is the hood latch itself. The second is the of the grill side of the latch. The third is the hood latch trying to get "inside" the upper portion of the latch. Hope this helps. If for whatever reason you can't get them, pm me with your e-mail address and I can send them that way. Mike IMG_0622.jpg IMG_0623.jpg IMG_0628.jpg |

Re: 41 p/u hood latch differences
Vanspeed: If that red circled are is the picture you're looking for I can't help you. My hood latch is a complete enclosure.
I read that Jalopy Journal forum information and found that there where different systems. Not only in the 4cyl, 6cyl, and v8, but also early 41 and late 41. Mike |

Re: 41 p/u hood latch differences
Sorry Vanspeed. I don’t have that 40 style hood and latch. Kube may have a picture from his 40 pickup restoration if you ask him.
