Default Reduction Ratio Gear End Cap Removal

I have the reduction ratio gear end cap off my 31 roadster. I need to get the gear shaft out to inspect it. How do I pry the end cap off without destroying it? Is there a trick to it?

I use a small flat blade screwdriver and work my way around it prying it a little at a time. Might be good to soak in solvent for a while first if it doesn't want to come out.
