Default Miller Hi-Speed Heads.

I am looking for some feedback on these heads. The biggest question is how much machine work is needed to install. How is the workmanship? THX. Jay

Jay,

It really depends on what you are trying to do, I have one on my coupe, sn 002.

I have installed a few over the years and not had any problems.

Most folks will try to hot rod something like this, improving exhaust, intake and camshaft.

Tell us more about your planned installation, you will get tons of suggestions.

John

Thanks for the reply. I have a 29 Roadster and am looking to do something different. My motor is a fresh build. It is balanced and blueprinted. It is .30 over with Ross pistons and a touring cam. It has bearings and a scat drilled crank along with bigger Chevy valves. It runs a stock looking milled head. Compression around 6 to 1. Intake for now is a Holly 94 and a sprintcar style header piped to a custom exhaust system. I have plans for two 48's. Rear gears are 3:54's. At 68 years young as I mentioned earlier, just looking for something different. THX.

Jay,

It sounds like you have a pretty stout setup. If me, I would just add a better head and call it a day. The stock chamber lacks quite a bit in the performance dept, not just the CR but the amount of turbulence from squish design. Do some research on the Brierley head, it has a chamber similar to the old HD flattrack design.
It put up some pretty good HP numbers too.

John

BTW, I prefer the OHV designs, Miller, Moller, Gemsa and McDowell. Working on a SOHC Gemsa for my coupe.

All of what John said, adding a bit. Steve's heads are very well engineered and he stands behind his product. Your current pistons would be ok for an overhead, but for best performance you would want to use a piston with some popup to get the CR up a bit.
Give Steve a call and talk to him.

When you buy a Miller from Steve, you get a complete package, rocker arms, push rods, etc. No machining is needed. You would probably want to change cams, depending its lift, because an OHV head gets lift from the rocker arms, 1.5:1 in this case, which is likely more than you would want with the new head, plus flathead cams have a different lift-rate, making the action quite fast and can be hard on the rest of the valve train. As John stated, you might want more compression but that not really necessary. No special machining of the block is needed.

My flathead would be much better than what you have, but although I am in production right now, I have a waiting list for them.

This is something different and it pretty much a bolt on improvement. I did modify a weber intake to accept the Stromberg 97 bolt pattern. I used the weber intake because its the lowest one made; I think. This allows everything to fit under the hood. Performance is peppy and with the T5 it is really fun.

Did you have to remake the idler mount? The manifold they offer is much higher. What is the bolt pattern on the top of the blower? I was thinking of making a manifold to mount a pair of 40 DCOE Webbers I have to keep it under the hood.

I have a related question. I have the torsional vibration dampener on the front of my crankshaft. It has a bigger diameter pulley. How would that effect the supercharger? Would it make the pressure too much? Could I (should I) run a larger diameter pulley on the supercharger to compensate?

Very nice setup. I like the manifold you used much better. I especially like your trick fuel shutoff...

Another question: What compression ratio are you guys running with the superchargers?
