41 Coupe shut down
Yesterday I had my 41 Coupe for a drive to a car show 52 miles one way.
When I would stop for a traffic light etc within a minute the engine shut off. Started just fine. It did this all day both directions. I have never had this happen in the 22 years I have had it It ran just fine driving it. Suggestions? |

Examples: pump the gas pedal? Pull the choke? Wait for a certain amount of time?

Kube
Having been sitting for a few days I have started it with just a few cranks. It idles and runs just fine. |

Re: 41 Coupe shut down
Kube,
Sorry, missed the question. The engine turns over 4-5 times and starts right up Don't pump pedal, choke nothing. That's what seems so odd |

Re: 41 Coupe shut down
I know it's a long shot, but I had a similar problem with a very different type of car (a 1957 MG Magnette). It turned out to be a break in one of the wires to the coil. The insulation looked fine but the wire was open inside. Most of the time, it made contact, but every once in a while (a big bump, a sharp turn) and it would open up momentarily. It was an absolute bugger to find.

Hey Joe, Does the car continue to run well if you don't stop at an intersection, etc.? In other words, it ONLY shuts down when you are "sitting there"?

Re: 41 Coupe shut down
Could a deteriorated flexible cloth covered fuel line on the firewall be the problem?
How's the fuel pump? |

Re: 41 Coupe shut down
All is well there. Have metal fuel lines and the cloth one is fine,

Re: 41 Coupe shut down
Is there sufficient fuel being pumped to the carb to sustain the required fuel bowl level ? Wonder why engine would idle just fine but shut off when stopped at a traffic light with engine running? Is fuel filter nice and clean? Is tank vented? I admit, I am just guessing.

I have an electric fuel pump which I may activate by a switch. I don't have it on constantly. However the fuel pump does not seem help either/ |

Re: 41 Coupe shut down
Do you think it's possible that the needle in the carb is sticking in the closed position preventing the adequate flow of gasolene into engine to keep it running. I had this happen and rebuilt the carb as the passageways inside the carb had also been blocked. Engine would idle fine but not respond adequately to acceleration as if it was starving for gas.
When you remove your air cleaner can you see gas squirting out of the nozzles inside the carb when you "give it gas"? |

Re: 41 Coupe shut down
From your description in your original post, it makes me think there is some obstruction in the idle circuit of the carb preventing it from getting the fuel it needs to idle properly. Seems to me If it runs down the road without stalling or trying to die, then you must be getting an adequate fuel supply to keep the car running in mid-range and cruising speeds. I would investigate and clean the passages in the carb idle circuit, just to eliminate that as a possible cause of the stalling problem. Another thought too...is it possible you might have a vacuum leak somewhere? In some cases, that can create the same symptoms. I would like to know when you find out what the problem is.

Re: 41 Coupe shut down
Sounds electrical to me. Try this; in your driveway fire up the motor and let it warm up and then idle. Then step on the brake pedal. If it shuts down then you have a wiring or ignition switch problem. Also check to see if any wires are in the way of the clutch pedal or brake pedal. I suspect a main power wire is shorting out when you use the clutch and brake to stop.
